Clarence Seedorf might be in his last season with AC Milan and what a way to go if they can win the Scudetto against Roma on saturday evening at Stadio Olimpico. Elsewhere on Sunday, relegation strugglers, Lecce will face Napoli while Cesena will travel to Sardinia to face Cagliari.
Roma vs. AC Milan
All eyes are on this match on Saturday evening, the Scudetto is finally on it’s first call of port when Roma takes on AC Milan, where the visitor needs only a point to secure the Serie A. The home team surely have their targets in sight too, a champions league spot next season would be vital for the capital club and anything but that could spell an unfulfilling season.
Roma kept their champions league hope in tact after going away from Bari with a 3-2 win after seeing a nine-man Roma team salvaging the three points. This time they have to thank their prodigal son, Francesco Totti for his double goal in an interesting three red cards, three penalities and a stoppage time winner from Roma’s Aleandro Rosi in the 95 minute. Another one of those dramas at the Stadio Olimpico could not be good for the heart but good for neutrals. The intensity of Saturday’s game with have to go without De Rossi and Perotta in the starting line up, Phillippe Mexes might also be doubtful while Vincenzo Montella might also be part of that absent list. Former AC Milan player, Mario Borriello is more likely to start up front.
AC Milan can surely do what others hope to do, end the Inter Milan dominance in Italian football. In the first season in charge of AC Milan, Coach Allegri managed to put the red/black half of Milano within one point of securing the Scudetto, taking the trophy across to another the trophy room in the same building. The former Cagliari coach was presented with a squad that didn’t bolster the same defensive quality of the past but made his attack the defensive strategy against weaker opponents. The counter attacking football with the likes of Ronaldinho in the first half of the season swiftly changed to playing off Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while Robinho and Pato had the supportive role from time to time. The old guard of Gattuso, Nesta, Ambrosini and offensive veteran Clarence Seedorf surely were given a lifeline this year. All immensely saw their youth return and the passion to play more but as the season curtain closes, AC Milan will be able to send off the old guard with a domestic medal and hopefully switching the new era for the younger generations to hold.
Milan won’t be playing for a draw and if they do, then it will be an enteraining one where there wil be action on both sides of the pitch. Roma has proven they are able to score goals and contribute with 90 minutes or more, with a bit more drama. Milan might not come away with a win but surely no matter what it is, they could do it next week home at the San Siro registering their Scudetto of season 2010/11.
Cagliari vs. Cesena
The Stadio Sant Elia will see one team coasting in preparation for next season while the other struggling to secure a place in the Serie A next season. The Sardinia team doesn’t have any incentive to make good stride for this season but surely their pride would take a bit of a hit after a good first half of the Italian season. On the other hand, Cesena needs a strong finish or otherwise they might have to battle further in the next two rounds left in the Serie A.
Two consecutive defeats for Cagliari must have got some punter’s alarming bell ringing. Their 2-0 defeat to 10-men Catania last weekend might have giving some people the impression that the Cagliari team is already experiencing post season feeling even though there is three games to go. Coach Roberto Donadoni might have to rethink his tactics as his team hasn’t won at the Stadio Sant Elia since February 27 when they beat Lazio. They will be without key player Andrea Cossu, who is suspended, while Nene and Francesco Pisano are injuried. The formation is likely to be changed to a 4-3-2-1 so that Robert Acquafresca will have the lone striker role which hopefully both Andrea Lazzari and Simone Missiroli can support him on the offensive.
There is one spot on offer for Lecce, Sampdoria and Cesena, who are the likely candidate to be relegated, in this season’s Seria A. Just two points between the three, Cesena has the advantage by leading with 37 points but after last weekend’s last minute 2 goals bonanza, Cesena saw a 2-1 defeat to Inter in which they were leading, saw 3 points go, then one point and at the end, Giampaolo Pazzini celebrating the misery of sending Cesena back into the relegation battle. Coach Massimo Ficcadenti must get his team back on track and not let that result effect them or otherwise things can get worse in the last three games. He will be without Ivan Faric and Dias Felipe while boosted with the news that Giuseppe Colucci returns from suspension. Davide Santon will be doubtful but if he starts, then that will certainly help the team for the survival in the Serie A.
Now Cesena might either get themselves in trouble or see themselves out of the race for that one spot. They will have to travel to Brescia and Genoa for the final two matches. If they don’t get any points at Cagliari then there is two more chances to go. Surely a point in Sardinia is the goal for Cesena.
Lecce vs. Napoli
Both teams are in a need for points and it would all three if they can have what they want. Lecce is doing it for survival while Napoli is more about keeping their title dreams on hope, not on track, but on hope. This game could give either one a definite answer to where they are heading this season as it comes to an end.
Lecce is the team that is worse off when it comes to the relegation drop zone strugglers. They occupy that one spot that will determine the next season football to be played in Serie B. They lack quality and that showed in their last two games where two consecutive defeats have really put them in a sticky situation after managing to picking up some points earlier on before creeping poor form. Coach Luigi De Canio can only hope that his main man, Jeda to get the goals he needs to stay up as David Di Michele is suspended.
Napoli’s dream of the Scudetto is more or less over but they are only one point away from qualifying for the Champions League next season. That would be foremost the key to improve their current club situation and surely taking on the fight with Inter Milan for the second place wouldn’t be a bad thing. Even though Napoli are on to better things, it still remains to be seen whether Coach Walter Mazzarri will stay at the club and guide them to further success. This weekend, Mazzarri will have yet again a full healthy squad to choose from and it is all about playing without fear.
Napoli might not have anything to fear whether they win or lose at Stadio Via Del Mare on Sunday afternoon. Most pressure will be on Lecce to perform to get themselves out of the mess they are in. Having said that, Lecce aren’t a team that you can count on when they play the top half of the Serie A but of course, Napoli aren’t one of the strongest teams when it comes to away games.
