Siena – Solidity the secret

By David, BettingExpert.com | Published

Manager Sannino is one of the more outspoken managers in this year’s Italian championship. He is sure to gift some memorable moments to the audience but what Siena fans will be interested to know is whether he can live up to his tough guy attitude and keep Siena hanging on until the end.

Manager: Sannino

Tactics: 4-4-2

Players In: D’Agostino, Mannini, Pablo Gonzalez, Angella, Gazzi, Angelo, Brkic, Destro, Contini, Bolzoni, Grossi, Milanovic, Acosta, Radoi, Pesoli

Players Out: Brandao

Current Probable Formation: Brkic, Vitiello, Rossettini, Terzi, Del Grosso, Mannini, Gazzi, D’Agostino, Brienza, Calaio, Destro

Siena’s along with Novara have one of the least attractive line-ups in the whole division. No player stands out and the profile is traditionally that of a small town team ready to sweat and work hard to keep up with the more resourceful lot they will be battling on this long journey taking them towards May.

Calaio is the team captain and the closest thing to a talisman in this squad. His has been a career in which he squandered his big chances but finally settled where everyone seemed to understand his needs. They gave him time to settle down and he delivered, slowly learning how to handle the pressure. The captain’s armband helped him in this process and, at the age of 29 going on 30, he has now acquired the necessary level of maturity to make his mark in the top flight.

Mannini and D’Agostino will recount tales similar to that of Calaio. Their hopes are to regain their confidence at a team which predicates patience. Both have very good feet and both that and their experience in Serie A will serve as supporting columns for Siena’s ambitions of survival.

The former is a winger. Fast-paced and precise in his crossing he will complement the attacking duo composed of captain Calaio and young Destro, another desperately looking for someone to believe in him and give him a chance to shine.

D’Agostino went from being the object of desire of Juventus two years ago to relegation to the darkest of corners in football. The Old Lady had opted for Diego after seeing their offers turned down by Udinese’s Pozzo, who had requested too high a price for him given the splendid season he was coming from. From then on his rapport with Udinese deteriorated. He is a free-kick specialist and can dictate the tempo of the team perfectly well. Will he need his time to recuperate his form though? Vergassola, another veteran, will be glad to replace him in the starting lineup.

Gazzi is the defensive midfielder and Brienza the left side winger in Sannino’s 4-4-2, which predicates safety ahead of anything else. The passing is good for a team of this level but away form will depend a lot on the squad gaining confidence with the league quickly enough.

Defensively they are a sound lot although not being able to count on players who can be considered rock solid. Terzi and Rossettini should be the central partners with Contini, back from his Spanish adventure with Real Zaragoza, ready to take any chances that come his way. Del Grosso is the starting left-back and Vitiello will be handed duties on the right.

Predicted finishing position: 18th

Siena play good football and can, if on their day, trouble anyone. However, they are deficient in experience and their top players – D’Agostino, Calaio and Mannini – are a moody bunch who cannot be trusted to be consistent in their displays. Despite the good organization of play they will lament the lack of quality and ultimately succumb to a Serie B destiny.
