One of the brightest stars in the European Championship 2011, Barcelona's Borjan Krkic will be leading Spain into yet another triumph but this time in the Under 21. He is up against nations like England, Denmark and Czech Republic who will be also looking to get their names on the trophy.
Under-21 European Championship 2011
The Under-21 European Championship 2011 will be held in Denmark from the June 11th to the 25th of June. The tournament will be starting with two groups of 4 nations competing for a place for the semifinals, only the top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinal held on the 22 June, winners of that game will have the honor of playing in the final on the 25th of June. The defending champions, Germany will not be represented in Denmark but the finalist, England, from 2009 will be there.
Group A:
Belarus, Denmark, Iceland & Switzerland
The host nation will be supplying their best to be represented in the 2011 edition of the European Championship. One player that will fit the bill is Ajax player, Christian Eriksen, also in the senior Danish national team, who ran rugged with the senior England team in the friendly held back in February. The Danish side is lead by Keld Bordinggaard will try to impressed the home fans and is expected to make at least the semifinals.
Both Iceland and Belarus are the least fancied of the two to get into the next stage of the competition, but if you had to say which one will do better than Iceland would be your pick. They are a good solid bunch who is also basically the culminated for some of the Iceland senior team.
The Swiss are one of the favorites to advance to the semifinals, they are a strong bunch and some of them managed to get run out in the senior team during the Euro 2012 campaign. Their hopes lies with the gifted winger Xherdan Shaqiri from Basel, who was part of the 2-2 draw against England in Wembley, two weeks ago. Both Nassim Ben Khalifa and Mario Gavranovic are hopefuls to shine this summer.
Group B:
Czech Republic, England, Spain & Ukraine
This is the group of death and when the favorites to win the tournament is Spain, then you are expecting some Spanish and Champions League champion, Barcelona players to be amongst the squad, well you got, Bojan Krkic, Thiago and David de Gea are just some to keep us happy that they will succeed. Expect no easy ride for them.
Like the Champions League, England is represented in this tournament and landed in the same group as Spain. Coach Stuart Pearce might have had a few absentees like Jack Wilshere, Micard Richards and Andy Carroll but Chris Smalling, Daniel Sturridge and Jack Rodwell will be there. A smackful of Premiership players will be there and with that experience amongst this squad, anything can happen.
One of the brightest defender will be in Denmark, Ukrainian Yaroslav Rakitskiy is one of most man in Europe at the moment. He will be complimented by Artem Kravets and Taras Stepanenko. If things goes positively they are in it with a shout and that goes for Czech Republic too. This is the outsider for the tournament, speechless during qualifying and also a former champion too. They got Vaclav Kadlec, who is Czech football talent of the 2010 while Tomas Pekhar and Marek Suchy could also excel in Denmark.
Verdict
One group is full of winners while the host nation is giving some slack and maybe a trip to the semifinals for sure. Both Spain and England are ones to watch and sadly ending up in the same group, they will have to battle it to get into the semifinals before they can even get near the trophy. Many will be looking at Spain to do some magic as many of the La Liga players are presented, but of course, so are the Premiership. Whoever ends up in top of group B will get a easier path in the final and that looks likely to be England.
