Red Bull

The Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix (Silverstone) might see a new winner beside defending champion Sebastien Vettel taking either pole position at the grid or winning yet another race. Either Silverstone could prove a new barrier for the other formula one drivers to challenge the Red Bull dominance.

2011 Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix (Silverstone)

Not even half way yet and Red Bull are already leading the constructors’ championship by 89 points from the McLaren while Red Bull Sebastien Vettel is leading by 77 points in the drivers’ championship. As we go into the British Grand Prix, the Red Bulls are in a comfortable position to retain the titles but there is no way that the championship is given out already midway so retaining the lead must be in Vettel’s mind.

The Silverstone race circuit have gone some changes in the past years, all drivers will have to do 52 laps in the 5.891 km circuit length while the race distance is 306.227km. The lap record was broken last year by Fernando Alonso and he holds it at 1:30.874. Race day is on 10th of July and Mark Webber will return to defend his win back in 2010.

Rules change

The Red Bull might have a comfortable lead but things are changes, maybe not on the standings but Silverstone will see the implementations of the off-throttle blown diffusers to be banned. That might be a blow for Vettel trying to extend his lead at the top. The Red Bull cars are based heavily on the exhaust in their design and since they are the pioneer of the genuine device, now illegal, they might be the ultimate loser of this ruling. Could this mean that Vettel will be beaten off for the pole position during qualifying and getting the wrap around from both the Ferrari and McLaren push? The British Grand Prix will have all the answers.

Let’s not take away Vettel’s brilliant win in Valencia but the expectancy of both McLarens Jensen Button and Lewis Hamilton to do one better than their last outing. Both driver missed out on the podium and dropping further points to catch Vettel might be the disappointment of the last grand prix. Home at the Silverstone, both Button and Hamilton should be giving their all in front of the home crowd.

The Ferraris are slowly getting their pace back onto the top car league and that is more likely to do with Fernando Alonso than his team mate Felipe Massa. Alonso finished second in Valencia although still 10.8 seconds behind Vettel, the car and the Spaniard’s confidence is growing each grand prix that goes by. With more courage and more risk taking strategy the Ferrari’s could be the one that will find themselves as the top challengers of the Red Bull. Alonso usually does a strong second half of the F1 season and with more luck, maybe it will coming earlier this year for him.

Prediction

Short and sweet, others are fighting for scraps behind the Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren, but closest would the Mercedes but they are struggling to keep the pace, when with a good lead. So again it’s all about the trio and Silverstone will certainly be a good fight. The McLarens are all about repaying their fans when it comes to the British Grand Prix but Mark Webber will certainly try to spoil the fun, that is if Vettel doesn’t get the faster car. To make matter worse, Fernando Alonso loves to do one better than Hamilton on this circuit but if it is a wet one, then it is unlikely the Ferrari will be able to compete. Where does this fight seem to be heading, well with the rules coming into play, the Red Bull has more to lose and if they don’t get the car running like their previous eight races, then McLarens  could make an impact at Silverstone.
