In a very thrilling Final of the FedEx Cup Playoff series, Bill Haas left East Lake Golf Club winning his first title of the season and $11.44 richer in his pocket after winning in a playoff match against Hunter Mahan when both Americans finished the 72 regulation holes on 8-under par 272. The sudden-death playoff finale in Atlanta went to three extra holes and it was at the second hole when the excitement unfolded when Bill found his shot half-submerged on the bank of a lake. Undeterred, Haas delivered a beautiful and superb shot worthy to win the title, hitting the ball from the water and set it within feet away from the cup to get back into contention once again. He then went on to par at the 18th green to finally win the TOUR championship and picked up the $1.44M prize. On top of this, he also beat players who were leading the FedEx table points, Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Matt Kuchar to collect the bonus jackpot of $10M, the highest prize in the sports.

Martin Kaymer Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Now that the PGA Tour Season is over, some of the players that made it to the FedEx Cup Final, with the likes of Luke Donald, Dustin Johnson and Martin Kaymer have flown to Scotland for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Overall, this week’s European Tour will have five of the top ten leading golfers in the world.

The Defending Champion

Martin Kaymer achieved his dream of winning in St. Andrews when he lifted Alfred Dunhill Links Championship trophy twelve months ago when carded 17-under par 271 to win the title.. Lifting another trophy just after he took part as part of the European Team that won the Ryder Cup in Celtic Manor. Adding to his feat, the German player also became the first European golfer to win three games in a row since Nick Faldo did it in 1989. The world No6 has been inconsistent with his game so far. After missing the cut at the PGA Championship, the 26-year-old then followed it up with a runner up result at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland. But after his positive result, he once again missed the cut once at the KLM Open, most recent game leading to this week. Martin Kaymer is (14/1) to win this year’s Alfred Dunhill 2011.

The Bookmakers Favourite

The reigning US Open champion, Rory McIlroy is the bookies favourite (10/1) to win at this week’s tournament. Since finishing a disappointing T64 at the PGA Championship, the world No3 player has been back in Europe and has only played twice since then. The Irishman has once again proved why he is dubbed to be the next Tiger Woods, he finished T3 at the Omega European Masters and had a solo third at the KLM Open three weeks ago. Nine out of his 15 event this season results are inside the top ten where five of it are inside top 5, which includes winning in Congressional in a historic fashion. Starting next year, Rory McIlroy will lessen his European Tour appearances in favour of the PGA Tour where he decided to take up a membership for 2012. For the reason that according to him, his play does not suits a windy and rainy condition but rather a fair-weather game in which America can offer. The forecast this weekend in Fife is fairly good and if the weather continues as predicted, we can expect that Rory will do well as this is what suits his game. However, UK’s weather is notoriously unreliable.

Luke Donald is in his 18th week on top of the golf ranking and after a positive result at TOUR Championship has extended his lead over Lee Westwood. The Englishman had a good chance mathematically to claim the Cup’s bonus money even without winning the tournament if only he could had finished as low as third but the world No1 finished in fourth place, a T3 with Geoff Ogilvy last Sunday. On the bright side, he is now leading the PGA Tour’s money list. Except for the FedEx Cup Series Playoff opening round in New Jersey where he T18, he finished inside top five. Luke Donald is 5/2 to finish inside top 5 again come Sunday at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship 2011.
