European Tour returns back in France once again this week at the oldest national open championship in Europe. Two weeks ago, it was in Lumbres for the Saint-Omer Open, this week it will be Paris’ turn to tee at the Alstom Open de France. Le Golf National welcomes some of the European star players who competed at the US Open two weeks ago, with the likes Martin Kaymer, Peter Hanson and of course, Miguel Angel Jimenez who is is the defending champion of Alstom Open. Versailles will have a stronger field as they compete to win the prize pot of €3,000,000 where the winner will take home €500,000 from one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on the European Tour on 30 June – 03 July 2011 at the Le Golf National.
Alstom Open de France Defending Champion
Miguel Angel Jimenez lifted the trophy after a dramatic three-man playoff with fellow Spanish Alejandro Canizares and Francesco Molinari of Italy when the trio finished tied at 11-under 273 in the fourth round of the French Open in Versailles. In the start of the playoff, compatriot Canizares and Molinari made a series of errors, landing in the water twice while the Italian found a bunker off the tee, was forced to lay up on the par four. Drawing from his illustrious experienced, Jimenez managed to win the French Open on first hole with a shot of 67, 4-under par compare to his rivals who had had 68s. Defeating the duo meant earning his 17th victory on the European Tour to become the oldest winner at the age of 46 at that time. The 47-year-old is currently 27th in the world ranking and three out of his five recent outing, he missed the cut, this include the recent US Open. Although his show of form is not on-par, the Alstom Open de France 2010 winner is hoping to be able to defend his title and win once again here.
Former Open de France Champion
The former world number, Martin Kaymer, has once again been overtaken in his position in the world ranking. He has been bumped one place down from third to fourth place in the OWGR by the US Open champion Rory McIlroy after his lack-luster showing at the BMW International Open last weekend. Failing to capitalize in playing on home soil, the No.4 finished outside top 10. He tied 18th, 9-under par 279 in Germany while he tied 39 after carding 3-over par 287 at the Congressional US Open two weeks ago. In his last five tournaments, his best result was at the Volvo World Match Play Championship. He went on to play to the semi-final to finish in T3. Aside from this, he has failed to finish inside the top 10. Although having mediocre result in his play, Martin Kaymer is the favourite by the bookmakers to win the title in France. The 24-year-old German is the highest participant in the world ranking to tee off Le Golf National. Martin Kaymer will be hoping to show the same form he had when he won in 2009 to win his 2nd Alstom de France title this weekend, his 5th appearances in this tournament.
