Martin Kaymer KLM Open

Before the start of 2011 KLM Open, it was been announced that two of the leading golfers in the world, Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy will not be joining the biennial matchplay competition Vivendi Seve Trophy in France that was named in honour of the great Seve Ballesteros. However, these two will be in Netherlands this week for the KLM Open 2011 which will be contested between the 08 – 11 September 2011. Germany’s Martin Kaymer has to defend his title that he won in fine fashion right after his first major win last year. Thomas Bjorn, who is enjoying best season of his life, winning two titles in two weeks - the Johnnie Walker Champioship and the Omega European Masters - will not tee off in Netherlands.

Defending Champion Martin Kaymer

Recapping Martin Kaymer’s KLM Open event last year, he went back to play for the European Tour just after winning his US PGA Championship title. He played in this event fired up and full of confidence, playing with a good swing from the start to the end. With only five shots behind the leader Nicolas Colsearts in the first round, he narrowedly closed the gap by two shots in the 2nd round and before the final round, he was already leading one shot. Maintaining his composure all throughout that Sunday, he consequently cruised to victory with his 14-under par aggregate of 266, to win the tournament by four strokes. Having won the KLM Open 2010, it was the 26-year-old seventh win on the European Tour and it was his third win for that season. Despite starting the year on a positive note by successfully defending his title in Abu Dhabi, the 26-year-old German was not only unsuccessful in his quest to defend and secure the US PGA Championship but also missed the cut in Georgia. However, his disappointment from his recent game did not deter him or deny him any confidence, returning from America to play in last week’s Omega European Masters to finish in second spot behind the winner Thomas Bjorn with his 6-under par 65 to close the tournament. He was four shots behind the Dane, with his total 16-under 268 at last weekend’s game. Although Martin Kaymer pulled out from Vivendi Seve Trophy in France to rest and be prepared to defend his title at the Alfred Dunhill Links in Scotland, he will be present in the Netherlands to defend his title. Going to Hilversumsche GC with much confidence in his game, this will only mean trouble for his opponents as he hunts for a double in Hilversum. Martin Kaymer is one of the favourites by bookmakers to win the KLM Open and he is at odds 15/2.

The Other Favourites

Rory McIlroy along with Lee Westwood, join the defending champion as favourites to win this weekend. The Northern Irishman Rory who just won the European Tour’s Shot of the Month award for two consecutive months was at the top of the leaderboard with Gary Boyd, Jamie Donaldson and Simon Dyson in the second round at the Alpine Eden last week. He was not able to maintain it afterwards and has remained in third place until the end of his game to finish 15-under par 269, a 5 shots behind the champ.

While on the other hand, going on Sunday’s final event, Lee Westwood was only one shot behind Welsh Donaldson who was leading overnight. However, with three bogeys on the 3, 4 and 16, diminished his chances as he ended up six shots behind the Danish winner instead. With his 14-under 270 total, the world No2 finished T6. This is Westwood's third consecutive game where he finished inside top 10; T9 at WGC – Bridgestone Invitational and T8 in PGA Championship. Lee Westwood is at odds 8/5 to finish inside top 5. On the other hand, Rory McIlroy is at odds 1/8 to win the KLM Open 2011.
