The last major golf tournament, the 93rd PGA Championship, will be held in Johns Creek, Georgia. It will be without a doubt that on the 08-14 August 2011, a powerhouse cast of the best golf players in the world to be seen in the greens of Atlanta Athletic Club. Ninety-eight out of the 100 players in the OWGR will be present for this event. The top ten in the world will be teeing off as it welcomes back Adam Scott who recently jumped back from No17 to No9 in the world after winning in WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last Sunday as well as Tiger Woods whose direction is going the opposite direction, going farther away from the top 10 ranking. Martin Kaymer will have a difficult task in defending his title. The last major event of the season is everybody’s game. With the Americans players hungry for major title and the European players taking the title on their plate, Martin Kaymer will have a difficult task ahead in defending his title and to win the winning prize of of $1.350M from the purse money of $7.5m in Georgia this week.
The Defending Champion Martin Kaymer
One year ago at Whistling Straits, Martin Kaymer won his first major title at the age of 21. Coming out on top after a three-hole playoff over American Bubba Watson, Kaymer joined the major-elite club title holder. Lifting the Wanamaker Trophy, he earned a spot in the European Ryder Cup team that eventually won in Celtic Manor. Picking up from where he left off last year, he then started the season with a bang, successfully defended his title in Abu Dhabi. Putting all the consistency he had shown from last year and in the beginning of the year, Martin saw himself took over the No1 spot from Lee Westwood in which he stayed on top of the world for eight weeks. Having not maintained his form, he saw himself slowly slide down from the summit. The reining PGA champ is now ranked No3. He has been to all three previous majors. He missed the cut at the Masters Tournament and at the Open Championship in Kent last month, the 22-year-old came 12th, which is by far his best results since February after coming close of winning the world Golf Championship in Arizona. In Akron last weekend, he finished T29. Martin Kaymer undeniably would not give up his title without a fight, however, it would not be an easy task for the German to emulate Tiger Woods back to back win in 2006-2007. With Tiger Woods no longer seen as the leading opponent for the title, the competition is anyone’s game. Martin Kaymer is on offer at odds 35/1 to win the PGA Championship back to back.
Resilient Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods comeback tournament in Ohio after a long three months on the sideline due to knee injury was not only disappointing for the former world number one with his T37 finish of level-par 70 but it was also a blow on the chin to have witness his former caddie of 12 years, Steve Williams, help Adam Scott win his first world title. On top of that, since his strings of extra-marital activities came to light, a string of sponsors Gillette, Accenture, AT&T, Gatorade and Golf Digest have turned their backs on him. Adding to that injury, Tag Heuer has decided to end their relationship with the now No30 Tiger - after dropping from 28th in the ranking. The 13-major title holder Tiger I back in the Tour, is no longer seen as a dominating factor in the golf and the sports he once ruled is now seen as open to anyone to have a good shot of the title. He is no longer the favourite to win in any tournament that he joins in, a far cry from the old days where putting money on him will be guaranteed a return. Instead, doubts are hovering whether he will ever regain his former dominance. However, despite what everybody is saying about his performance in Akron, he sees his result as encouraging. His resilience is what makes Tiger one of the best players in the world. Would we see it in Atlanta Athletic Club, perhaps not. It is still early days and he is still finding his way back to his former glory. Tiger Woods is on offer at odds 8/15 to finish in top 20.
Adam Scott with Steve Williams
Adam Scott won his first world title in Firestone Country Club with his new caddie Steve Williams (who after serving him for 12 years with Tiger Woods has apparently claimed he was sacked on the phone) on his side after signing off a 5-under par 65 with a four-shot victory over the runner-ups Rickie Fowler and Luke Donald at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational. Scott has been on form, four months ago in Augusta for the Masters Tournament, the Aussie a runner up. He lost by two strokes against the South African Charl Schwatzel to win his first major title. From the 24th in the world ranking in the beginning of the year, The Australian leaped-frog to 9th spot this week leading to Georgia. Having been comfortable with his long putting swing and having Williams who has 145 wins experience under his belt as a caddie, Scott’s confidence is running high. Taking a bulldog approach to his game, Adams Scott is at 7/4 to be the top Australian player for the USPGA Championship.
Rory McIlroy The USPGA Favourite
The landscape in the golf world has changed for Rory McIlroy. Since winning his emphatic and historical win at the US Open in June at Congressional Country Club, the Northern Irishman has taken the spot of Tiger Woods as the favourite to triumph in a major tournament. At The Open in Kent last month, Rory failed short with his T25 finish when he carded 7-over par 287 in the final round in which he blamed his poor display on the weather that battered the event and claiming he prefers playing in a soaring heat instead. Tuning up at the World Golf Championships last Sunday, the 22-year-old had a positive result after finishing T6 with his 3-under par 67 in the final round. Having tuned-up his game in preparation for this week’s major and tied with his wish of a fine weather conditions that is expected to graze the greens of Atlanta Athetic Club, he will not have any excuse not to do well this weekend. Rory McIlroy is the bookmakers favourite at odds 12.00 to lift up the Wanamaker Trophy in Georgia for the 93rd USPGA Championship.
