The third Major golf tournament this season The Open, will once again be without Tiger Woods. It’s a de javu for the former world No1. In 2008, after winning the US Open, Woods missed the toThe OPEN Championshipurnament after undergoing a knee surgery. His troubling-knee is back and he has been advised not to play at the Open after failing to recuperate in time for The Open Championship in Kent. Tiger Woods has been missing in action since the early month of May after withdrawing from The Player Championship. Having had four surgeries on his knee, the 35-year-old is not taking any risk and has decided to listen that he will only come back in the game when he is 100% fit.

Tiger Woods might not be around for 140th Open Championship but as expected in a Major tournament, it will be a star-studded affair. Sandwich will have the world’s leading players from the top 10 in the OWGR. Some have just The Open Claret Jugrecently tuned up their games at the Barclays Scottish Open, in the hope to replicate the defending champion Louis Oosthuizen’s victory last year. The South African played in Scotland one week before winning last year’s Open. Castle Stuart course in Inverness will have the same similar condition that will greet them in Kent, hence, it will be a great place to prepare for this event to take a slice of the new increase prize money. This year, players are on a treat, the organizers have decided to raise the prize pot from £4.8M to £5M where the winners will received an extra £50k, a total of £90k to take home as well as raising the Claret Jug.

The Defending Champion

Louis Oosthuizen won his first Major title last year in St. Andrews in style. The South African finished closing his final round 71 with a four-round total of 16-under par 272, a seven-host lead from Lee Westwood.  The 28-year-old has remained in America following the US Open and decided to play for the PGA Tour’s  John Deere Classic. He instead chosen to be in Illinois to prepare for The British Open rather than in Inverness for the Scottish Open because of love for the tractors. Hopefully, this would be enough for him to defend his title and win his second Major. WillimaHills is offering 12/1 for Louis Oosthuizen to retain his title.

Roaring For Second Major

Most of the leading players like to play competitive golf before a major tournament, but this is not the case for Rory McIlroy. After his historic win in Congressional last month where he recorded the lowest score in the US Open history with his runaway 16-under-par 268, an eight-shot lead finish from Jason Day, the Northern Irishman has rested and could be seen benefiting from his new found celebrity status in which he has been enjoying. Having not been part of tournament since then, this has criticisms and doubts on whether he is well prepared for the Open. However, he has started practicing at the venue and continued to do so in an undisclosed location ahead of the tournament in Sandwich. The world No4 is hoping to win a back to back Major title, the US and British Open and he is the bookies favourite. Ladbrokes is offering 7.00 for Rory McIlroy to win the 140th Open Championship Royal St Georges GC, Sandwich, Kent.
