When hurricane Irene was about to hit the eastern coast of America last weekend, a mandatory evacuation was issued on its low-lying areas. One of the states that were about to be affected was New Jersey and having seen the destruction it caused in the Caribbean, New Jersey did not take any chance nor the organizer of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Series. In preparation to its imminent destruction, The Barclays tournament were cut short. From 72 holes, it was slashed to 54 holes and instead of teeing in group of two, players were asked to tee in group of three. Having shortened the first leg of the FedEx Playoffs, this benefited Dustin Johnson. He finally won his first tournament of the season after beating the defending champion of the Barclays 2010, Matt Kuchar, by two strokes while trailing behind the with three strokes were Brandt Snedeker and Vijay Singh who both tied in third.
The Deutsche Bank Defending Champion
Around this time last year at Norton, Charley Hoffman teed up for the second leg, he was not even considered to be in contention to win the title. Yet the American did, he had a sensational display after scoring 11 birdies in the last round to finish a total of 22-under par 262. Hoffman led by 5 shots in front of Geoff Ogilvy (50/1 to win) and Luke Donald (12/1 to win) and as a result, he acquired his first win since 2007. Since then, he has failed to make another display of form. The 34-year-old had played 24 games this season, however, he only finished twice inside the top 10. These were in April’s Valero Texas Open where he came T2 and last week’s tournament in Plainfield Country Club where he finished T10. Although the No63 in the world had a positive outing last weekend, it will be tough for Charley Hoffman to finish inside top ten, (who is 7/1 to do so) let alone defend his title.
The Barclays Winner
Before the start of the opening of the FedEx Cup, Dustin Johnson was seating 19th in the Playoffs' table. Now that he has won his first title of the season, he will be leading the way for the top 100 players who made the cut to play in TPC Boston this weekend. Having shot 6-under-par 65 at the shortened Barclays tournament in New Jersey, the 27-year-old not only bagged $1.440M but has also jumped in different tables in the golf world. First, as mentioned earlier, Dustin is going to play for the Deutche Bank Championship in front of everybody. Secondly, winning the first prize, he leaped from 15th to 3rd in the PGA Tour’s money list and thirdly, he is sitting next to in the pecking order behind Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Steve Stricker in the world ranking after jumping from being No9 to No4 this week. Despite starting inside the top ten in his first two opening tournament in the season along with finishing second at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March and at the Open Championship in England last July, it took him up to now to win an event. Although he finished T57 last year here, playing a shorter game last weekend due to hurricane Irene, he will be going to Massachussets well rested and having won the title last Sunday, Dustin Johnshon is full of confidence as he heads for the second round for the PGA's playoff. However, he is not the bookies’ favorite to triumph in Boston. He is at 18/1 to win back to back in the FedEx Cup Playoff’s second leg.
The Barclays Ex-Winner
Martin Kuchar went to New Jersey last week to defend his Barclays 2010 title, he found himself leading the leaderboard at the end of the second round last Friday. If the official of the tournament decided to cut the event even shorter as hurricane Irene made her way to the eastern part of America, we could have seen him win the title again. However, this was not the case. Nonetheless, the 32-year-old still did well with his 3-under par 68 last Saturday. Having had a 17-under par 196 overall, he finished the event in 2nd place, three shots behind the winner Dustin Johnson. Finishing inside top-10 nine times in his 20 touranments played this season as well as inside top-15's in his last two games in Norton, Matt Kuchar is offered in the market at 2/1 to have another top-10 finish come Sunday at the Deutsche Bank Championship 2011.
