The start knock out event of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Playoff Series will be held this week in Edison New Jersey on the 25the – 28th August 2011. The top 125 will have to compete for the winning prize of $1.350M from the purse money of $8M as well as making it to the top 100. Twenty-five players will be sent off while the rest will to advance to the following week’s second round of the playoff in TPC Boston for the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Matt Kuchar wins The Barclays

Amongst the players that were sent off early and who is not taking part of the Playoff Series is Tiger Woods. He will not play in the FedEx Cup 2011 that he had won twice in the last four years. Sinking farther down the world ranking following the decline of his form, the former world number one, now ranked No36, was invited to play in the European Tour’s Johnnie Walker Championship by its organizer. The American declined the offer and instead decided to wait until his next scheduled tournament in November for the Australian Open. However, according to his website, Tiger is thinking of adding another PGA Tour tournament on his sleeves. With his continuous slump in form and no longer dominating the world of golf, the tournament has become anybody’s game. The last seven majors have been won by first-time winner. Not even going farther, this is more evident at the Wyndham Championship when Webb Simpson won the title. The playoffs would not be of any different. There is no clear favorite to win on this year’s FedEx Cup, anyone of the 125 players is in contention. But the plus side of this is, there will be an excitement as we anticpate who will be the winner of the FedEx Cup 2011 title in which Jim Furyk won last year. But before the drama and actions unfold,  first thing first, last year’s winner Matt Kuchar have to defend his title for the first round of the PGA’s Playoff Series in Plainfield Country Club for the Barclays tournament.

The Barclays Defending Champion

Matt Kuchar goes to New Jersey in hope to defend his title that he won in Ridgefield Country Club last year He found himself leading the way to the second round of the series, the Deutsche Bank Championship, when he defeated Martin Laird in a playoff. This is all thanks to the Scottish Laird failing to hold on tightly to his lead when he bogeyed his last hole. With Martin losing his grip, he took Matt to the playoff. The American Kuchar took advantage of this turn of event to win the Barclays. The 32-year-old from Florida is ranked number 12 both in the world and in the FedEx Cup standing. Half of his 19 games played this season, he finished inside top 10. Although he missed the cut in his two consecutive game at the Open Championship and RBC Canadian Open, he made up for these by following it up early this month with a finished of T19 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship. Matt Kuchar is 11/5 to finish in top 10 at the Barclays as he defends his title.

The Playoffs Leader

Nick Watney goes to Plainfield Country Club leading the FedEx Cup standing after gathering 1,906 points on the table. This is partly because of winning two titles this year, AT&T National and WGC-Championship and his consistency of playing this season. On top of his winnings, having played a total of 17 events, eight of this was inside top 10 and three is inside the top 25. In his last tournament at the major in Georgia, the 30-year-old American finished T12, a seven shots behind the winner Keegan Bradley. Overall, Nick Watney has done well this season and for him have a top 10 finish in the first round of the Playoff series, he is 25/1 in the market.

First of the four part of the PGA’s FedEx Cup Playoffs starts this week. At the start of the season, players’ aim is to do well in all their tournaments in order to gather points to get to the top 125 cut off of the playoffs. There is a new aim for those who made week’s tournament is not only to get to the final round of the playoff in Georgia Atlanta for the TOUR but also to remain in the number one spot of the FedEx standing to win the biggest prize of $10M for the overall winner of the series. But before this, they have to pass the first hurdle tournament, The Barclays 2011.
