The prodigal son has come back to his home state of California to play the Fry.com Open on the 06-09 October 2011. Before his fall from grace, Tiger Woods was very selective of which tournament he plays on. But after his fall from grace, the tide and the time have changed for the former No1 now No51 in the world. He no longer commands and makes the condition where and who to play for. In fact, Captain Fred Couples told Tiger Woods that in order to be one of his captain’s pick for the American Presidents Cup, he needs to play in this week’s tournament. Hence, we see him this week teeing off in CordeValle Golf Club. On the other hand, it is to the delight of the Fry.com organizers to be the first event that Woods will be teeing since his disappointing outcome at the PGA Championship in Georgia where he missed the cut. All eyes will be in California this week to see how Tiger will be doing as he faces Fry.com's defending champion Rocco Mediate, who he defeated at the U.S. Open in 2008.
The Defending Champion
Rocco Mediate had a good round at the Frys.com Open last year. All throughout the game, every day leading to the final, Mediate had holed out for eagle. He won this event with a one shot lead over Bo Van Pelt and Alex Prugh after a final card of 15-under par total 269. It was a big deal for the American to have won this 12 months ago as it was his first win on the tour since 2002. Unfortunately, that has been all about it for Rocco since then. It took him eight years to follow up his last victory and going to defend his title is not impossible but would be difficult to retain it. He has played 20 events this season but so far, his best result on the PGA Tour is finishing 31st at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, which is way back in the beginning of the year. On top of this result, he only made it into the cut 6 out of the 20 tournaments he played. As he faces some of the players with major titles on their belt, with the likes of Louis Oosthuizen (33/1), Earnie Els (35/1), Angel Cabrera (75/1) and other more, base on the outcome of his games, his form is against him. It will be difficult for the 48-year-old to hold on to his title. The defending champ Rocco Mediate is at 150/1 to extend his 2011Frys.com Open title for another year.
The Comeback of the Tiger
Frys.com Open 2011 will welcome Tiger Woods as he comes back from his months of rest. Missing the cut at the PGA Championship 2011 in Atlanta Athletic Club and plagued with injuries to his left leg and personal issues with his former cuddy, this week’s golf event in California will be his first game since August. Because he did not make it to the PGA’s FedEx Cup Playoff Series, the 35-year-old American has to wait even longer that it took up to this week to resume his tournament. Even though he has declined in form and now entering the tournament placed No51 in the Official Golf World Ranking, Tiger’s popularity has not faded off. The boost on ticket sales has been tripled for the organizers. Moreover, even though he has not won any title since the scandal that broke his marriage to Elin Nordegren, Tiger Woods is still the bookmakers favorite to win Frys.com Open at odds 7/1. Before an unexpected withdrawal at The Players Championship in Florida due to knee injury, he had his best outcome at the Masters Tournament where he had T4 finish. Now that he is back and will be playing in his home State, this could be an advantage for Woods as he uses it as his tune up for the Australian Open and his prepration of the American President Cups. When Tiger Woods tees off this week, all eyes will be in California to see brought his former self that all fans are waiting for and all players are dreading for.
