The Presidents Cup 2011

More than a year ago, the Ryder Cup 2010 took place in Wales. Led by Colin Montgomerie, Europe was victorious against the American team which was led by Corey Pavin. This time around, the American Team has once again set off to compete in Australia against the International Team for The Presidents Cup 2011. Played for four days starting on the 17th-20th November 2011 in Melbourne, this biennially golf event is taking its ground as one of the featured event of the PGA this year. An alternative to the Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup was created in 1994 for non-European players from different nationalities to compete against the American Team.

At odds 10/11, the Team America is captained by former Masters Champion Fred Couples. Team USA appears to have stronger players, with 9 inside the top 20 of the OWGR and four of these are inside top ten. Whereas, International Team, who is also at odds 10/11, have only 4 players inside the top twenty in the world ranking with Adam Scott their highest seeded player.

On the other side, players from Team International are more experienced with this event. Having only two players, Jason Day and Aaron Baddeley making their first appearnce while the US have five players out of twelve, Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Webb Simpson, Nick Watney, Bubba Watson and Bill Haas.

Since the conception of Presidents Cup, the US Team have dominated this affair. Losing only once in 1998 and were tied in the following year, they have won it six in total. At the last competition two years ago, they lifted the trophy under the same leadership of Team Captain Fred Couples. In his team are world No5 Steve Stricker, No6 Dustin Johnson, Webb Simpson (9), Matt Kuchar (10), Nick Watney (11), Mickelson (12), Bubba Watson (17), Hunter Mahan (19), David Toms (20) and Jim Furyk (41) who were all automatically qualified to take part while Bill Haas and Tiger Woods was Couple’s Captian’s Pick. Dropping PGA Champion Keegan Bradley in favour of the defunct former world No1 Tiger Woods stirred up controversy. Many felt that Bradley is more deserving to be in this year’s line up rather than Tiger. Needless to say, Woods appearance in Royal Melbourne this week, the tournament has been an object of discussion for months and has been given the stage that it deserves. With a good mix of season-experience, first-timer squad, as well as, well seeded top players in his squad, Captain Fred Couples will be hoping to retain the title.

On his second term of captaincy, Greg Norman’s Team International are Adam Scott (7), Jason Day (9), CharlSchwartzel (13), K.J. Choi (15), Kyung-tae Kim (24), Geoff Ogilvy(38), Y.E. Yang (43), Ryo Ishikawa(49), Retief Goosen (51), Ernie Els(52), and his Captains’ picks are Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley. Four from the Asia, three from South Africa and interestingly, nearly half of the team are Aussies. Winning only once since its creation and with home fans on their side cheering for their five home-grown talents, Team International is determined to lift up the trophy this time around. Defeated last year by the Europeans, Team USA is no longer seen as unformidable but having said this, Team US will not give up their Presidents Cup title without a fight.
