This is what the FedEx Cup Playoff Series build-up is all about for the players, to get to the TOUR Championship in Atlanta this weekend to be crowned the PGA FedEx Cup champion. Having started the playoff series in New Jersey four weeks ago, there were 125 players. As it progressed, it is now trimmed down to the top 30 in the points standing. As to the rest of the players who did not make it this far, they have to wait for the Fall Series to start. On the other hand, the 30 surviving players that will tee-off in East Lake GC will vie their way to get hold of the title and the $1.44m first prize from the purse money of $8M. But for the the top five on the FedEx table, Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Matt Kuchar, there is more at stake for them. The possibility of a huge payday of $11.44M in total if they win on Sunday in Georgia.

The Defending Champion Fails To Defend
Jim Furyk who won last year was one of the players who dropped out in the third series and failed to make it to the Final to be defend his title. Although the American had a sixth-place finish in the second leg of the series, Deutsche Bank, it did not help save him from the elimination. His T22 in last weekend’s BMW Championship and his T52 place in the Series opener, The Barclays, proved to be the catalyst. The 41-year-old from Pennsylvania joins Tiger Woods (2008 and 2010) and Vijay Singh (2009) in not qualifying for the season-ending to defend their title.
The 26-year-old inside Top Five FedExCup Standing
Webb Simpson propelled atop the FedEx Cup table race after winning in a play-off against fellow American Chez Reavie when they both finished the 72 holes on 15-under par 269 in TCP Boston. In Contrast to the previous year where he was sent off early when he did not make the cut in the second leg, one year later, he is not only teeing-off in the final but also leading the the table points of the FedEx Cup. This is due to him winning the Deutsche Bank and finishing solo in fifth place at last week's BMW Championship. The 26-year-old from North Carolina will be under a lot of pressure as he competes in Georgia as there is a huge amount of money at stake. Simpson is at 7/4 to finish inside the top 5 and doing so will give him the chance to win the TOUR and mathematically, he can still win it even though he finish 29th. He is at 12/1 to win the final series of the FedEx Cup 2011.
Before the start of the Cup, all the players were hoping to win the first round, hoping to secure a place in the Final. This is proven to be the case for the American player Dustin Johnson. Although the 26-year-old had a disappointing finish in Massachusetts (T42) and in Lemont (T65), because he won the opening series in New Jersey, he has only been knocked down one place. He is behind the leader, Webb Simpson on the table as he goes to Georgia this week. Finishing as low as 6th place will give him a reasonable chance mathematically and inside the top 3 will be reasonable to win the TOUR 2011. Dustin Johnson is at 20/1 to win the 2011 TOUR Championship and at 7/2 to finish inside top 4.
Justin Rose found himself having the chance be one of the leading contenders to win the top prize when he won in Illinois this weekend. Last Sunday, he won his first title of the season and his third in the PGA Tours since 2007. Before the game in Cog Hill, the Englishman was ranked 34th in the point standing, however, after winning the BMW Championship 2011, he had a gigantic leap and has moved to the No3 spot. Thanks to a one week rest of the Cup Series before resuming the third round, he had time to prepare for tournament in Lemont by playing in the mini-tournament that consists of his family and friends. The 26-year-old Rose has played 21 tournaments so far and out of these, he only managed to have five top 10 finishes. Last year in this tournament, he finished T15. Finishing 2nd will give him a reasonable chance while he can only finished as low as 4th if he still wants to have a mathematical chance to win the jackpot. He is at odds 20/1 to win outright.
The 30-something inside the top five FedEx Cup Standing
The world No1, Luke Donald, is another player who has the shot to collect the $10m. Placed 4th in the FedEx reset points, he can only finish as low as 3rd if he still wants a mathematical shot in winning the jackpot. If he is successful by the end of Sunday afternoon, he will be the first player to win the PGA and European Tour money title. This is not a surprised to see Donald in this position. He has been consistent in his game. In his 17 events played in the PGA Tour, 12 were finished inside top 10. Four out of his five recent games were inside top ten and dissecting this further, three of them were inside the top 5. In this Series playoff, the 33-year-old Englishman has been showing his form, finishing T18 at the Barclays, T3 at the Deutsche Bank Championship and fourth place at the BMW Championship. It seems like there is no stopping for the Englishman to get hold of the prize pot. Last year, the world No1 was a runner up here. Luke Donald is the clear favourite by the bookmakers to win the 2011 TOUR Championship in Georgia at odds 6/1.
So far this season, Matt Kuchar has not won any title despite having nine top 10 finishes out of his 22 games in the PGA Tour. His best result was in June for the Memorial Tournament (T2) in Ohio and at the Barclays where he was a runner up finish four Sundays ago. In the last two years of the TOUR Championship, the American finished outside top 20, T25 in 2009 and T22 in 2010. He has only two options - to win on Sunday or finish 2nd if he wants to pocket the $10M jackpot. Matt Kuchar is at 18/1 to win.
