Bubba Watson

Immediately after the U.S. Open 2011 where Rory McIlroy made a historic victory in Congressional Country Club , Bethesda to become the youngest US Open Championship winner, PGA Tour goes to the ground of Cromwell, Connecticut for The Travelers Championship. TPC River Highlands is one of the oldest courses in America and third-shortest course on the PGA Tour calendar with only 6,841 yards at par-70. It will be totally different from the more grinding US Open course in Maryland. Players can make a lot of birdies and for those who took part on the second Major of the year to continue on what needs to work on their games. It will be more relax and welcoming destination for most of the golfers including Bubba Watson to win the purse money of $6M where the winning share is $1.08M as he defends his title in Connecticut’s Travelers Championship.

The Defending Champion

Bubba Watson – The winner of the Travelers Championship 2010, Bubba Watson travels to Connecticut to defend his title for the first time. Twelve months ago, it was an epic win for Watson to win his first victory in the Tour since turning pro. He came back from six strokes down to tie with Scott Verplank and Corey Pavin at the end of the final round, winning a par putt on the second hole of the sudden death in the playoff. The 32-year-old lefthand golfer went on to finished 72 holes at 14-under-par 266 to win the title. Never looking back, he added went on to win title two titles this season, the Farmers Insurance Open and Zurich Classic of New Orleans, not to mentioned his second finished in last year’s PGA Championship, losing in a playoff to Martin Kaymer. Having said that, in his last 4 tournaments, the American finished outside the top 40. At the US Open Championship last week, it was a disappointing finished for the world No13, he finished T63. Although leading the greens in regulation in PGA Tour, at last week’s final round, Bubba had only carded two birdies. The defending champion Bubba Watson is hoping to retain his title as he attempts to become the first back-to-back champions since Phil Mickelson in 2011 and 2002.

The Past Winner

Hunter Mahan – Has a good record in this tournament, having won in 2007 and had runner-up finishes in this event. Although he was in form prior to the US Open, the American missed the cut in last week’s competition in Congressional. However he is fourth in the, 37th in putting and second in birdie average as well as finishing inside the top 15 in his last 5 games, his showing a more promising result to bounce back in Cromwell.  The world No.4  is one of the bookmakers’ favourite to win the title in Cromwell.

Wants To Be A Winner

Padraig Harrington – After a grueling week at the US Open where  the three-time Major winner had a disappointing outcome in Bethesda finishing T45, Padraig Harrington is not putting his feet up to rest this week. Paddy will make the TPC River Highland as a platform to get back on track to build his form that has been eluding him. Having a minor surgery last year, the 39-year-old was forced to miss the BMW Championship 2011 when his knee problem started to re-occur. Adding to that, the only victory he has had since winning the Open Championship and PGA Championship three years ago was winning in Singapore’s Iskandar Johor Open last season. At the Travelers Championship 2010, the Irishman finished here T5. Padraig Harrington, yearns for a title and he will be hoping to have a good showing at the Travelers Championship 2011 this weekend and use it as a preparation as he goes to a more challenging tournaments in the summer.
