Having finished the last major of the season, the USPGA Championship last weekend in Georgia, some of the players will be heading to Sedgefield Country Club to resume the regular Tour of PGA in Sedgefield Country Club. Wyndham Championship will be the last chance for both players who are secured inside the 125 standing to enhance their game and for those who are outside to give bring on their A game to make it to the cutoff ahead of the Playoff Series that will take off in New Jersey next week. Although most of the top guns in the golf world will be resting this week or will be playing in Europe, the tournament will not be short of action for the fans. Among the top names that are vying to be inside the 125 position are Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and Paul Casey. Arjun Atwal has to defend his title against players who are very motivated to give their solid performance and give their final push to the first series in Plainfield Country Club - The Barclays.
USPGA Champion Keegan Bradley who won in Atlanta Atheletic Club last weekend will not be in Greenboro. After winning the last major tournament, the rookie rocketed from being in the 108th to No29 in the world and on top of that, he moved 20 spots up in the FedEx ranking from 24th to 4th that the American has got nothing to worry about his position in next week’s playoff game. Instead, the 25-year-old will be enjoying his victory and would be preparing for the Barclays, that is, if he finds time in between his hectic schedule of appearances that comes in the territory when winning a major tournament. Also joining the absentee roll in the Tour is Tiger Woods who unlike his fellow American, the former world No1 has failed to impress once again. At the PGA Championship, Woods carded 10-over par 150, missing the cut for the third time in a major at the USPGA in his professional career.
Arjun Atwal The Defending Champion
A year ago, Arjun Atwal made a history for his country when he became the first Indian golf player to win the PGA Tour. The 38-year-old from Calcutta who started the final round with three-stroke lead concluded the day with a one shot lead with his 3-under 67 finishing a total of 20-under par 260 to win and avoid a playoff match against American David Toms. However, since winning last year, he has failed to follow up his triumph. This season, having played 23 events in total, he has only been once in top 10 where he finished T8 at HP Byron Nelson Championship in Texas. Out of his last seven games, including his outing in Georgia, Atwal had five missed cut. With these outcome, his prospect of defending his title is quite dim. It will be a surprise if Arjun Atwal will finish inside the top 30 but nonetheless, he is 100/1 to win Wyndham Championship back to back.
David Toms The Favourite
This time last year, David Toms lost the title to Arjun Atwal by one shot. Although he had seven birdies compare to Atwal who had only four in the final round, it was not enough for the American to snatch the victory with his 6-under par 64 with a total of 19- under par 261 game. The 44-year-old Toms entered the season ranked 79 and as he head to North Carolina this week, he is now ranked No18 in the world. Being the runner up last year and having finished inside top 10 in his last two games - T4 in PGA Championship and T9 in Bridgestone Invitational, David Toms is the odds favourite at 12/1 to win the Wyndham Championship 2011.
Paul Casey Fighting For His Place
Ranked number 17 in the world, Paul Casey will be fighting for his right to be inside the PGA Playoff Series. Although Casey started the season in a stellar form by winning the Volvo Golf Champions in the European Tour, his form has been down south. With his PGA appearances, three out of his 12 tournaments in the PGA Tour were inside the top 25 where his best finished was in February at the Northern Trust Open at T12. Hence, he is current in 147th place in the FedEx standing. At the last major event of the season in Atlanta Atheletic Club, the Englishman finished T72. The 34-year-old will be present at Wyndham Championship 2011 in hope to revive his position to be inside the 125 players cutoff for the PGA Playoff Series that would start next week in New Jersey. Paul Casey is 11/2 in the market to finish inside top 10 at the Wyndham Championship that will take place on the 18 - 21 August 2011in Sedgefield Country Club, Greensboro, North Carolina.
