The first Major Championships this year will tees off this week in Augusta, Georgia. The 2011 Masters Tournament will take place this weekend from 07 – 10 April 2011. Taking home the biggest slice from the prize pot money of $7.5m is just the half of the prestige, having to wear the green jacket at the end of the tournament would make the whole affair complete. This year, European players are to be watched at The Masters. Martin Kaymer (1), Lee Westwood (2), Luke Donald (4), Graeme McDowell (5), Paul Casey (6) and Rory McIlroy (9) will be in Georgia. They are stronger, more confident and they are dominating the top 10 of the OWGR. The likelihood that one of them wins in Augusta Natioanal GC this weekend is not a far fetch. Phil Mickelson who is a three time winner in Augusta and the defending champion in the Masters 2011 and Tiger Woods who is a four-time-winner winning again is not impossible. However, they Europeans will be there to make it harder for them to win 2011 Masters.
Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson is raving with confidence after a win a week before the US Masters begin. While some of the players, the like of Tiger and Martin opted out a week or two from the greens to prepare for the Masters, the 40-year-old who feels he is not getting the right score in his previous tournaments decided to sign up at the Arnold Palmer Invitation and Shell Houston Open. A week before the event in Georgia, Lefty won in Texas. He finished the tournament at Redstone GC in style, carding 9 birdies with a closing shot 7-under-65, finishing a three clear from the runner up Chris Kirk and Scott Verplank at the Shell Open this weekend. On top of this, the American and three-time Masters winner (2004, 2006, and 2010) moved from 6th place to the 3rd spot of the OWGR. The defending champ will be pretty confident about his game as he heads back into the Masters to win the green jacket back-to-back.
For Phil Mickelson to win back to back and his fourth green jacket, the odds at Ladbroke is 8.00
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods this year last year, Tiger returned from his five months self-impose exile from the tournament after a scandalous extra-marital affair emerged that lead to the end of his marriage. The four-time Masters champion finished in a tied fourth last year’s US Masters. He has plunged to his lowest position of 7th in the world ranking and has not won in his 20 events since returning to the competition and 2009 Australian Masters was his last tile. In his 5 games since the start of the season, his only top 10 finish was at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in early last month and at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Woods disappointedly finished T24, carding double bogey in 18th hole. For the first time, former No1 comes second favourite by the bookies to win the Masters, behind Phil Mickelson. Desperate to capture his form but without the pressure of being the favourite, he could slide his way back in Augusta.
For Tiger Woods to win The Masters, the odds at Ladbrokes is 12.00
Martin Kaymer
Started the season well, winning his opening tournament of 2011 at the HSBC Golf Championship, back-to-back and for the third time. However, his showing in Abu Dhabi is in contrast when it comes to The Masters tournament. The 23-year-old German has not had a good outing in Augusta. In his three appearances in his career, his stay were short lived, missing the cuts on all his visits. However, Martin is world No1 for a reason, unquestionably, the US PGA Champ is with a class and is an extraordinary player. The world number 1 has improved so rapidly in the past three seasons and there would be no mistake that he will be a contention in this week’s tournament.
For Martin Kaymer to win The Masters 2011, the odds at Ladbrokes is 21.00
Lee Westwood
The runner up 12 months ago in this event the third favourite to win 2011 The Masters Championship. Last year, the 37-year-old was in form that led to his triumph in ending Tiger Wood’s reign as world number one. However, having not found his form since the start of the season, he was overtaken by his European Ryder Cup team mate Martin Kaymer during the WGC Match Play. The former No1’s best finish was at the European Tour’s Omega Dubai Classic, finishing T15. A top two finish would see him retain the top spot. Lee Westwood is one of the relaxed players around, he will be hoping to regain his best form as he heads up at the US Masters in Augusta, Georgia.
For Lee Westwood to win his first major title US Masters, the odds at Ladbrokes is 17.00
After winning last weekend in Redstone GC, Phil Mickelson has finally found the score he is looking in time to defend and win his 4th Masters title, while on the other hand, his compatriot Tiger Woods has to find his. Although having played here and won several times during their career, they cannot be complacent. The title has not been won by a European since Spanish Jose Maria Olazabal won here in 1999. However, a new breed of European players are emerging and they will be in Georgia and there are six Europeans on the top 10 ranking who will be there. This year’s tournament is considered to be a wide open contest. Perhaps we could see a new world No.1 and/or a European winning is not a far fetch. Either way, the Europeans are far more ready to take on the green jacket and their presence will be felt at the US Masters Tournament 2011 at the Augusta.
