David Barron's Pearl Secret made a real impression when winning on his debut last season, and can make a winning reappearance in Doncaster's featured handicap.
The well bred colt was heavily backed to land a warm York maiden in October and showed a bright turn of pace in the soft ground despite obvious signs of inexperience. The recent rain has eased conditions ideally this afternoon, and he appears very leniently treated on handicap debut with Jamie Spencer again in the saddle.
Main danger comes from John Best's Lupo d'Oro. The 3-y-o shaped with promise on his recent return at Nottingham, tiring at the furlong pole to finish a creditable sixth of thirteen. He remains a maiden after ten career starts, but there appeared nothing wrong with his attitude when consistently placed in a busy juvenile campaign. While lacking the "star" potential of our selection he seems sure to be thereabouts and has race-fitness on his side in stamina sapping ground.
Topweight Powerful Wind returns after seven months on the sidelines and seems sure to need a run or two to reach his peak. He won at Bath, Ffos Las and Ayr last season, all at the minimum trip and has plenty of raw speed when tuned up. However, all those runs came on decent ground or faster and it must be very doubtful he will handle this much more testing terrain.
Electric Qatar hails from the red-hot Tom Dascombe yard and has the assistance of Kieran Fallon in the saddle for the first time. He rather lost his way after a promising start to his juvenile career and was a major disappointment when 1-3f on his return in a lowly all-weather maiden at Kempton 44 days ago.
See Clearly showed nothing when tailed off on his Pontefract return and may not have trained on, while Cockney Fire regressed after winning his first two starts on fast ground and is very hard to fancy under these terms.
In summary a gilt edged opportunity for the well regarded Pearl Secret to keep his unbeaten record. He can assert late on under a typically confident hold-up Spencer ride. At around Evens this morning a maximum win investment is recommended.
