Columbian's consistency set to be rewarded

John Gosden's consistent Columbian is a confident selection to land Leicester's featured Sir Gordon Richards Conditions Stakes.
The experienced 3-y-o has been campaigned primarily in France this season, making the frame all starts, including in Prix du Jockey Club and Prix Niel behind the top class Reliable Man. He is dropped down massively in grade here a will be very hard to beat if anywhere near his best on return to home soil.
This has gone to Godolphin in 3 of the last 4 years, and Sadeek's Song looks their best chance this time round. He confirmed debut promise when an easy winner of a 1m Nottingham maiden last month, and showed better form when ¾-length third of 8 to Oceanway in handicap at York next time. He is less exposed than our selection and is open to improvement with the stable in excellent heart.
Stablemate Al Shemali won the Dubai Duty Free last year, but is not the same force in 2011, and his latest second to Mahbooba in a listed race at Newmarket was not necessarily a sign of a revival, as he never threatened the facile winner there.
Perhaps Goodwood maiden winner Late Telegraph will pose a bigger threat. Beautifully bred, he will appreciate the extra furlong here and fits in the "could be anything" category. However the fact he was fitted with a hood for that winning debut suggests his temperament might not be all it should be.
In summary Columbian is a proven sort who has been performing with plenty of credit in Pattern class. At around 4-5 this morning he represents a decent win investment, with the forecast wet weather due this afternoon further enhancing his claims. He can be produced in the final furlong by William Buick to deny the Godolphin pair.
