racing preview

Goodwood stages a comepetitive Sunday card this afternoon, with Dean Ivory's 4-y-o R Woody worth an each-way interest in the featured 2.35 Aero Club handicap over 6f.

The £11500 prize money has attracted a twenty runner field full of decent sprinters, and the layers are offering 10-1 the field to try and lure punters into an investment.

R Woody catches the eye coming here after a very promising fifth at Leicester 20 days ago, his best run of a so far disappointing season. This slump has seen his handicap rating slip to 1lb lower than when winning this race last season and he appears primed for a repeat bid. Encouragingly his small stable landed a very valuable sprint yesterday and is clearly in decent form itself at the moment.

Dangers abound, with perhaps the unexposed 3-y-o's Dickies Lad, Corporal Maddox and Gourays Gold heading the shortlist.

Dickies Lad returned to form after a gelding operation at York last time out and is feared off the same mark today, while Corporal Maddox caught the eye at Chester last time when a clear second after a long spell in the wilderness. Gouray Girl is another who has crashed down the weights in 2011 after drawing a blank, but she shaped much better last time and might be on the way back to her best.

All in all a very hard race where, as usual, luck in running will play a huge part, however at 10-1 this morning R Woody is worth a small each-way bet with the return to Goodwood sure to suit his strong finishing style.
