racing preview

Charlie Longsdon's reliable stayer Strongbows Legend is selected to land Plumpton's featured At The Races Sussex National at 2.45 this afternoon.

The lightly raced 7-y-o put up a much improved performance when gaining a pillar-to-post success at Hereford last month, jumping far more fluently than previously over the larger obstacles and revelling in the testing ground. This marathon test seems sure to suit and he will be very hard to beat if getting into a similar rhythm from the front.

Mid div and Creep is the main danger on form, and seems sure to be primed for this valuable prize by her shrewd yard after 242 days away from the action. She was a prolific pointer and a revelation for this stable last season, finishing a fine second in the Foxhunters at Cheltenham. The only negative is her best form is on much faster ground and this easy surface is not sure to suit.

Molly Round could have more to offer over fences and won't want for stamina. The 8-y-o was progressive over hurdles last term, and made a first completed start over fences a successful one at Exeter last year, finding plenty having come off the bridle earlier than most. He is certainly race-fit having finished third back over 3m there on Sunday and still unexposed granted a stiff test of stamina.

Rate of knots has been very consistent without winning recently and is sure to be thereabouts, while Double Dizzy is another that rarely gets his head in front and will need the re-application of the tongue-tie today to have a drastic effect.

In summary, a tightly matched handicap which is sure to be run at a decent gallop even in the rain eased ground. Strongbows Legend really enjoyed dominating last time up and appears sure to get a soft lead again. At around 3-1 this morning he is well worth a win bet to give weight and a beating to some more exposed rivals.
