Fingal Bay set for Grade 1 Challow victory

racing preview

Phillip Hobbs unbeaten and potentially top class Fingal Bay is a confident choice to land Newbury's feature Grade 1 Bathwick Tyres Challow Novices' Hurdle at 3.05 this afternoon.

The 5-y-o has created a deep impression in winning all four starts impressively, and made the transition to graded company readily when winning the Neptune hurdle at Sandown last time out. He was unsuited by the steady gallop there and did well to fend off the useful Simonsig up the hill. The long Newbury straight will suit his stamina laden run-style and he is confidently expected to see off some highly regarded rivals for the £30000 prize money.

Main danger may come from Sue Smith's gritty Fill the Power. He revelled in the testing ground to land a valuable prize at Newcastle last time out, finding plenty having come off the bridle fully a mile out, and is sure to set a solid pace to utilise that proven staying power.

Nicky Henderson's Top of the Range beat the very promising One Term (subsequent dual bumper winner, including a listed event) on his debut in April and is an exciting prospect himself. He made an impressive hurdling debut last time out, taking a while to master the front-runner but receiving little more than firm hands and heels to take over after two out and soon stamping his authority. He's bred to stay well and will be suited by at least three miles in time, but may not have the experience yet to challenge Fingal Bay.

Hard to Swallow was firmly driven and held when falling behind Fingal Bay on his latest start and hasn't reproduced earlier bumper promise, while Tim Vaughan's Hereford winner Ballyrock appears well out of his depth.

In summary, Fingal Bay appeals as a class above this field and can continue his upward progression to win a fifth consecutive race. His performance today will give his trainer a clear guide as to what to target at the Cheltenham festival in March, where he is sure to be a warm order wherever he goes.
