Bob Buckler's reliable chaser Ballyegan can return after 260 days off to land the Wincanton feature at 2.40, the Bathwick Tyres Handicap Chase over 3m3f.
This marathon trip on the rain eased good to soft ground will be a thorough test of stamina, even at this sharp course, and that will suit our selection. He ran with credit in better races than this all last season, and has been found a very winnable opportunity this afternoon, with his stable showing signs of life after a typically slow start.
The promising Andrew Glassonbury is in the saddle for the first time and he is sure to positive on the 6-y-o, with doubts hanging over all his principal rivals.
Reymysterio was a hefty gamble first time out but had made a series of bad blunders before finally getting rid of his pilot, and will need huge improvement in that department to feature upped in class here.
Tarateeno has winning form at this course in the past but hasn't shown much sign of life in recent runs, and will surely struggle lumping 11-12 over this severe test.
Perhaps Digger Gets Lucky might emerge as the main danger. He will strip fitter for a pipeopener at Chepstow over hurdles, and showed that he stays well when a decent second over 3m2f in January. His yard form is poor however, and that tempers confidence despite a drop in class.
In summary, a slog in the mud should suit Ballyegan, and at around 5-2 this morning he is worth a win investment against rivals who may well be on the decline.
