Venetia Williams has made a typically slow start to the season but her progressive Renard has been the standard bearer, winning impressively twice after failing to stay a longer trip on debut. He has an excellent chance to gain an uncontested lead in Exeters feature at 2.30 this afternoon, and repel all up the straight under regular pilot Aidan Coleman.
Robin de Creuse was expensive to follow over hurdles at the end of last season, but even so he could well make a better chaser now sent handicapping on his return to the fray, and he may prove the main danger to our selection if getting into a rhythm over the larger obstacles.
Baseball Ted won this race twelve months ago and ended that season with two more wins. He was a solid second at Carlisle on his return, before a rare below-par effort next time, but on balance of form is very likely to bounce straight back. However, lumping 11-12 in this very testing ground will be a very stiff challenge and he may flag late on.
Betabob landed a brace of 2m handicap chases last winter, and has climbed in the weights as a result. He was a solid fourth of ten on last month's return, and shouldn't be far away once again if stripping fitter for that pipeopener.
In summary, a warm handicap for the £10,000 prize money, but Renard has seemed a chaser on the upgrade this term, and is well worth a win investment at around 5-2 this morning.
