racing preview

The consistent Ebony River is a confident selection to land Hereford's featured Bet Live & In-play at Victorchandler.com Handicap Hurdle.

The 6-y-o made the frame in all three starts for Donald McCain during 2010, but has improved since switched to the Jeannie Candlish yard, just caught close home last time out at Bangor having attracted significant cash beforehand. This testing 2m6f should prove ideal and the forecast heavy ground will hold no fears.

Main danger may come from the thrice raced Caulfields Venture. He has finished fourth in all starts over hurdles to date, including on his handicap debut at Ascot last month. The way he travelled there suggests this shorter trip will suit and he is by far the least exposed runner in the line up this afternoon.

Triptico was awarded a Newcastle bumper in March and made an encouraging hurdles bow when fourth at Exeter on his reappearance. He was below that level when a well-beaten third at Uttoxeter on his latest run, but it is too soon to write him off totally although better ground may be required.

David Pipe's Piraya failed to cut the mustard as a chaser but showed more life over the smaller obstacles at Ascot last time and is respected, while Am I Blue has been firmly in the handicappers grip since landing a controversial gamble at this course in 2010.

In summary, a tight handicap but a great chance for the reliable Ebony River to turn silvers into gold. At around 3-1 he is worth a decent win investment under regular rider Alan O'Keeffe.
