Havingotascoobydo has crept into this afternoon's Cheltenham feature handicap chase with a flyweight and is chosen to land the £40,000 prize under Alain Cawley.
The 7-y-o was a progressive hurdler who has continued in similar vein over fences, winning his first two completed starts before excellent runs in handicaps at this course the last twice. He is 4 lb "wrong" at the weights here but the step back up in trip will suit, and he gets lumps of weight from some more exposed rivals.
Duke Of Lucca shapes as one of the main dangers. He too was a useful hurdler who got off the mark at the third attempt over fences, having Habbie Simpson beaten when that one fell late on. His fencing looks sound enough and he is a very interesting contender switched to a handicap off what appears a lenient rating.
Ghizao has been expensive to follow in recent starts, but represents the formidable Walsh/Nicholls combination and has a decent turn of pace when he gets into a rhythm with his suspect jumping. He will be thereabouts and the forecast decent ground is in his favour.
Calgary Bay has a career record of only three wins which does no justice to his ability (one of those came in the valuable Dipper Chase on this card three years ago). He turned in a much better effort this season when fifth here last time and may be approaching his best.
In summary, a very competitive handicap to start the new year, but an opportunity for the consistent and quietly progressive Havingotascoobydo to land his most valuable prize to date. At around 8-1 this morning he warrants a maximum each-way interest.
