racing preview

Paul Nicholls highly regarded French import Kauto Stone is selected to land the featured Grade 1 Betfair Ascot Chase at 3.00 this afternoon.

The expensive purchase has been campaigned at the top level in both starts since joining the champion trainer, winning impressively at Down Royal in a Grade two on debut before a very creditable second to Sizing Europe at Sandown. This step up five furlongs in trip seems very much in his favour (proven stamina by winning over further at Auteil in 2010), and his smooth travelling style is sure to be well utilised by Ruby Walsh.

Main danger for the £150,000 prize money comes from Riverside Theatre. He has been off for 364 days since landing this race last season, and it will be interesting to see the confidence behind him in the betting nearer the off. He confirmed himself a top-class chaser with an authoritative win that day from Gauvain, travelling well for most of the way under a patient ride before quickening on two out and just shaken up to extend the lead after the last.

Medermit is a consistent performer at the highest level and followed up a fortunate win in the Haldon Gold Cup with a superb effort in a top class Cheltenham handicap. He is sure to be thereabouts but may just be found wanting for a turn of speed at the business end.

Gauvain has form figures of 1F1F this season and clearly is a potent threat when getting his fencing right. He appeared held when departing at this course last time and is safely held by the principals even if at his best.

Little Josh seems sure to set a rapid pace and will come on for his seasonal debut at Cheltenham in January. He shaped well that day until tiring up the hill (mixed fast gallop), but hails from a stable that is beginning to struggle for form after a very decent winter. The Grand National may be a more realistic target after this.

Imsingingtheblues is a consistent handicapper with a decent record at this course but appears outclassed, while Tatenan will find this a lot hotter than the C&D contest he scrambled home in last month.

In summary, a high quality field for this very valuable prize. Kauto Stone is open to a deal of improvement upped in trip and is well worth a substancial win bet at around 5-2 this morning.
