Nick Williams' top class Diamond Harry is the value choice to land the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock Park this afternoon.
The £200,000 prize money has attracted a fantastic field with last seasons Gold Cup hero Long Run installed as the warm odds-on favourite. However he tends to need a run or two each season to reach optimum fitness levels, and will surely have retaining the Cheltenham showpiece in March as his main target for later in the term. For that reason we side with the prolific Diamond Harry.
The 8-y-o has had his share of training problems and reappears after 356 days away from the course. His record fresh however is superb and, as long as the promising James Reveley can find fluency in the jumping department, he can pounce late on with a customary turn of speed.
Weird Al is sure to be popular with proven race fitness on his side after readily landing the Charlie Hall at Wetherby first time out. He is another with a fragile record and is far from certain to build on that. Perhaps the runner-up that day Time For Rupert can reverse the form, with the long straight here sure to suit the stamina laden 7-y-o.
Former champion Kauto Star is reportedly in great shape ahead of this seasonal debut, but he seemed a shadow of his former self after a gallant effort behind Long Run in the Gold Cup, and retirement is surely soon on the agenda.
In summary, many will view Long Run as a "good thing" with improvement assured as he matures, however he was beaten in a handicap early last season and may not be cherry ripe for this pipeopener. At around 6-1 this morning, last year's Hennessy winner Diamond Harry has to be the value call, with his stable at last among the winners after a typically slow start.
