Long Run can resume winning ways in Denman Chase

racing preview

Long Run is a confident choice to land this afternoon's featured Betfair Denman Chase, a perfect warm-up in his bid to retain the Gold Cup in March.

The 2011 Blue Riband hero has been runner-up twice this season behind the evergreen veteran Kauto Star, with minor jumping errors proving costly both times against the revitalised champion. He is reportedly in terrific form at home and can land this rescheduled Grade Two chase under regular amateur rider Sam Waley-Cohen.

The £30,000 prize money has drawn out a small but select field a month before the festival. Main danger may come from the enigmatic Tidal Bay, who has showed all his old ability is intact for Paul Nicholls in two starts this term. He was given a perfect ride by Ruby Walsh when a strong finishing second to Midnight Chase in the Argento at Cheltenham at the end of January, and this long straight seems sure to suit his run-style if on another "going day" (can drop himself out and not be interested).

What a Friend appears the second string on rider arrangements but is a high class chaser at his best and may outrun his odds. He underwent a breathing operation in the close season and was well below par when reaappearing over hurdles in 0ctober last year. This run may just be needed again and the Grand National in April may be a more realistic target after this pipeopener.

The Giant Bolster is a model of consistency at the top table and got his jumping together last time out to land a very valuable Chelltenham handicap. He continues to progress steadily and is sure to set a decent pace fo our selection to aim at in the straight.

Burton Port reappears after a long absence and is another fascinating contender. He injured himself when runner-up to Diamond Harry in the 2010 Hennessy and has not been seen out since. A career record of five wins from seven starts entitles him to respect if over the tendon problems that have dogged him since.

In summary, a top class chase that lights up a high quality card. Long Run has a bit to prove after two expensive defeats this season, but he has an ideal opportunity today to find rhythm over the fences at this fair, galloping course. At around 4-7 this morning he represents a maximum win investment before heading to Cheltenham to defend his crown.
