racing preview

The national hunt season gets into full swing today with Ludlow staging the valuable £10000 Betfair handicap chase at 3.10, where Baily Storm is a speculative each-way selection off a fly-weight.

Lawney Hill has had an excelllent start to her training career, repeatedly improving other yards cast offs, and she has acquired Baily Storm after a series of flops in the Summer. As a consequence he has slipped in the weights and appears very well treated today. If she can restore the zest that saw the 9-yo win three novice chases in 2010, the 8-1 on offer this morning may prove a massive price.

Calyspso Bay hails from a powerful yard, and with McCoy in the saddle is sure to prove a popular favourite. He at least comes here in decent heart, winning on his second attempt at chasing at Marcet Rasen. This bigger field and a 6lb higher mark are two negatives today, with his jumping a major concern against some seasoned handicappers.

Fast ground at this speed track should be ideal for Plunkett, and he can prove the main danger if getting into a rhythm early on. He didn't shine at Fsos Las last time but had excuses and connections reach for a visor which ought to help his rather suspect temperament.

Cootehill returns after five months off and appears to have it to do lumping 11-12, while Bold Perk has been caught by the handicapper after a winning Summer spree.

In summary, Baily Storm is not one for maximum confidence, but this scopey sort can be revitalised by a switch to an up and coming yard and, at the prices, is worth an each-way interest receiving weight from some less than inspiring rivals. Daryl Jacob will hopefully be positive and send his mount into the lead early and try to repel all late on.
