Captain Chris can successfully return after a six month absence to land Exeter´s featured Betfred Haldon Gold Cup at 2.50 this afternoon.
Phillip Hobbs has his string in excellent heart and he reintroduces his top class 7-y-o in an brilliant renewal of this £60000 prize. He has won his last three chases, culminating in wins at both the Cheltenham and Punchestown festivals, and can give weight away to some useful rivals under regular rider Richard Johnson.
Ghizao is the main danger, having already beaten our choice twice last season. He has an excellent turn of foot when finding fluency in the jumping department and must go close with Ruby Walsh up.
Medermit is safely held on Cheltenham form and may just need a run to put him spot on for targets later in the year, while Cornas usually finds a few too good when competing at this top grade.
Perhaps Zaarito is the unexposed one to challenge the form principals. He returns after 321 days off and has obviously had training problems given a very lightly raced profile. When he does appear however he is very useful, as highlighted by a superb second in a grade two on his only start last season. Any cash would be a huge hint that he is primed to go close.
In summary Captain Chris is the solid bet at around 9-4 this morning. The long Exeter straight will bring his stamina into play, and he can gain revenge on the pacey Ghizao in what promises to be a thrilling battle for this very valuable prize.
