Somersby can land Grade 2 glory at Huntingdon

racing preview

The high class Somersby is a confident selection to land this afternoon's feature Betfred Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon.

Prize money of £55,000 has attracted a quality mix of proven performers and up-and-coming pretenders in a fascinating contest, and our choice is expected to return to the winners enclosure having tasted defeat behind Master Minded at Ascot last month. He jumped and travelled well that day and was merely done for pace by the top class winner in the straight.

There are plenty of dangers with perhaps highly regarded The Nightingale the biggest threat. He ran as though just in need of his seasonal debut when a tired third in deep ground at Down Royal and will relish the faster conditions at this speed course. He has always travelled as though capable of winning in graded company and will get a patient ride off a fast pace this afternoon.

Tartak has been primed for this with two unplaced efforts in France and has an excellent record here. He does seem best when able to set his own pace however, and may find the trailblazing Mr Moonshine a spoiler at the head of affairs.

Gauvain returned to his best when winning a "match" at Cheltenham first time out, but was just starting to feel the pinch when falling in the Tingle Creek last Saturday and may lack the speed for this on the forecast good ground.

Hidden Keel and Surfing are two novices who step up massively in class and it will be interesting to watch them with an eye to the future.

In summary, the reliable and proven Somersby will relish a well run race at this flat course where he has tasted success in the past. At around 7-4 this morning he is worthy of a win investment under regular pilot Dominic Elsworth.
