racing preview

Wetherby stages the valuable Bobby Renton Handicap Chase at 3.55 this afternoon, and Jamie Snowden's consistent 8-y-o Horseshoe Reef is selected to land the prize under Sam Twiston-Davies.

Although sporting a visor, this reliable stayer has been in excellent heart in the early months of the national hunt season, finally getting his head in front when cruising home at Uttoxeter in September. He showed his raised handicap rating held no fear when a clear second in a better race there last time, and holds a crucial fitness advantage over several of his main rivals today.

With the layers set to bet around 8-1 the field, this is clearly a wide open contest for the £8250 prize money, and perhaps course specialist Border Reiver may pose the greatest danger. He has won six times at Wetherby and shaped very well when second at Sedgefield last time after a three month absence. He hit the front too soon there, eventually idling after the last and getting collared, however with more patient tactics he must go well on the ideal fast ground.

Persian Gates was impressive in a poor race last time, but the assesor hasn't missed him and a 10lb rise seems very harsh, while unexposed Meet the Critics is an interesting runner after 222 days off. In-form trainer Brendan Powell has engaged champion AP McCoy for the ride on his impressive Newbury winner, and any cash later on will be a huge clue as he steps up massively in class into a warm handicap.

Morning Moment defied a 15 month absence when leading all the way in July, however another three month gap suggests his training problems are not behind him, and he will not find domimating this bigger field easy from a stiffer rating.

In summary, Horseshoe Reef seems sure to give his running and this hardy performer is worth chancing each-way at around 8-1. He comes here race fit and is versatile tactically in a race sure to be run at a fierce gallop at this tight course.
