Jeremy Scott's promising stayer The Boss is selected to land the featured Braceys The Friendly Builders Merchant Novices' Handicap Chase at 2.30 this afternoon.
The 7-y-o readily won a 2m5f handicap hurdle at Warwick last season and was a very good second back over fences in blinkers at Newbury in December. He was not at best last time but this step up in distance seems sure to suit and he remains far less exposed than most at this level.
Main danger for the £6000 prize money comes from the very consistent Kilcommon Pride. He shed his maiden tag with a wide margin win at this course on chasing debut in November, and has improved steadily since, with a creditable second last time out showing that this increased handicap rating is not beyond him
Spot the Ball represents the powerful JP/Jonjo/McCoy combination and seems sure to start favourite as a result. He has improved this season, winning over fences at Towcester in November and hurdles at Southwell in January and will be thereabouts again. As a negative, the handicapper has raised his rating with every run and our selection may be open to more improvement.
Iona Days improved this season when getting off the mark over fences at Cartmel (2m5f) in August, and ran well to make the frame in all three starts since. However, he didn't totally convince with his stamina at Wincanton over 3m1f last time and the long straight here in soft ground seems sure to prove too much of a test.
Topweight Always Bold has turned in some reluctant displays since landing a brace of Fontwell handicaps and is best avoided, while the ex-Irish Macra Na Feirme is worth a glance at in the betting later as his stable landing a huge gamble in a similarly modest contest recently.
In summary, a great opportunity for The Boss to return to his best. He showed in a much better contest at Newbury that he is well capable of winning from a fairly lenient chase rating and the latest blip is worth forgiving. At around 5-1 this morning he is worth an each-way investment under the in-form Nick Schofield.
