Maraafeq can return to form for flying Venetia

Venetia Williams has been in blistering form since the turn of the year, and her Maraafeq is selected to land Ludlow's feature Church Stretton Handicap Chase at 3.10 this afternoon.

The 8-y-o has failed to cut much ice in three attempts this season, but all those runs came at a time when the yard was firmly in the doldrums. He has been off for 52 days since getting brought down in a better race at Hereford, and has been given a real chance by the handicapper returning to a course where he has an excellent record in the past. The drying ground is ideal and the promising 7lb claimer Harry Challoner being in the saddle is another positive.

Morning favourite Ere Alfie has been creeping toward full fitness and shaped well when third under 11-12 at Huntingdon last time out. He has a decent record at this sharp venue, with two career wins, and is sure to set a decent pace at the head of affairs.

Timpo hails from a yard suddenly in great form and he has been revived by the fitting of cheekpieces the last twice, gamely winning at Towcester in November. A 66 day absence since is a slight concern and the assesor has pushed him back up in the weights.

Civil Servant has performed with credit here and gets in with a flyweight. However, his yard has gone very quiet this month and the step up to three miles is not certain to suit (faded over 2m4f at this course last time).

Topweight Emperor Concerto is worth a precautionary glance at in the betting nearer the off. He has been absent since March 2011, but this yard is adept at getting one ready first time up and he had good form at a higher level in the past.

In summary, a competitive field chasing the £6000 prize money, but a great chance for Maraafeq to return to form under perfect circumstances. At around 8-1 this morning he is worth chancing each-way on a speed course where his smooth travelling run-style is ideally suited.
