Romulus can defy topweight on chase debut

racing preview

Romulus D'artaix has always appealed as the type to do better when switched to the larger obstacles and he can land the Contract Fire and Security Handicap Chase at Warwick.

The 6-y-o has performed with credit when in the frame in some warm novice hurdles and handicaps this season, but is a scopey type who will surely improve over a fence. This is a modest contest for the £6500 prize money and, if he can get into a rhythm early on under 11-12, he will surely be hard to beat under the red-hot Wayne Hutchinson.

Ockey De Neulliac has been a rare-money spinner for the Ferdy Murphy yard this winter, winning three races from six starts despite the stable largely struggling, and he is a smooth traveller who revels in testing ground. This is a much harder contest than the one he won at Ayr nine days ago however, and the handicapper has raised him to a career high rating.

Forty Five deserves credit for finishing placed on his last four starts, but he is often outbattled when the pressure is applied and was an expensive failure when a warm favourite at Ludlow last time out.

Arctic Ben ended a long losing sequence when winning over two miles at Uttoxeter on New Years Eve and his stable is suddenly in flying form after a slow start to the season. Howeever, he is a very hard puller who needs settling and must be rated a doubtful stayer upped to 2m5f this afternoon.

Perhaps fellow chase debutante Reginaldinho will prove the biggest danger to our selection. He failed to cut much ice in deep ground over hurdles at the end of 2011, but the yard is in much better form now and any cash later on would be a huge clue that he has schooled well and is fancied off this flyweight.

In summary a tight handicap but a great chance for Romulus D'Artaix to lose his maiden tag at the tenth attempt. He appears well treated and at around 7-1 is worth an each-way investment.
