The Betfred Cambridgeshire at Newmarket on Saturday is a typically competitive renewal with 35 seasoned performers going to post for this valuable heritage handicap.
Roger Charlton has his yard in excellent heart as the ground has eased this Autumn and he has entered two of the market principals. Strong preference is for his progressive Cry Fury who seems very well treated despite enjoying a productive season. At a top priced 10-1 with the sponsors he represents a decent each-way proposition, with most firms paying 1/4th the odds five places.
Speaking on Attheraces on Thursday, Charlton reported, "I think you need a Group horse to win the Cambridgeshire. I got his trip wrong last time, running him over a mile and a half at Haydock. He quite clearly didn’t stay or settle. When you get big fields and plenty of front-runners wanting a position they tend to go a bit quicker so you need to stay the trip. It’s a tough race, but Cry Fury has improved".
Stablemate Proponent brings solid top class form to the table but the feeling is the handicapper may have him in his grip now, inching up in the weights after a series of near misses.
A bigger threat is sure to come from the current 7-1 favourite Dare to Dance. An impressive winner over this course and distance last month, Jeremy Noseda's improver has slipped in at the bottom of the weights and is sure to be popular with the in-form Jamie Spencer in the plate. However this is a big step up in class and there seems little value in his current price.
Royal Ascot winner Sagramor is proven in this grade and comes into this relatively fresh having been laid out for this
prize. With the decent ground sure to suit he may prove to be the main danger and at around 16-1 is worth a saver.
It is interesting that several firms reported cash for him this morning when the weights were published.
