racing preview

Paul Webber's Cois Farraig can return on seasonal debut to land this afternoon's Carlisle feature, the £18000 Cumberland handicap chase at 2.40.

The 6-y-o won a 2½m Grade two novice chase at Newbury on just his second start over fences and may be very well treated pitched into a handicap here after a seven month absence. The yard has been in decent form in the past fortnight, and the forecast good to soft ground should be ideal for this strong-travelling type.

With such a big prize for a Sunday, sixteen runners have been declared and there are obviously many dangers in a contest where the layers bet around 6-1 the field.

Quilimar returned from six months off better than ever, travelling strongly and jumping well to win at Newton Abbot last month. He has been raised 8 lb as a result but could be the type to stay ahead of the handicapper.

Humbie also made a successful return from 3½ months off over this course and distance last time, showing improved form in the process. A 7 lb higher mark demands more, but he is unexposed over this trip and is another open to a deal of improvement this Winter.

Last years winner Etxalar is from a small yard going really well and he is entitled to respect. However his poor jumping has seen his form slump since that win and he may struggle to find fluency under pressure in such a big field this time round.

In summary, Cois Farraig is by far the least exposed in a very warm handicap, and at around 12-1 this morning, is worthy of an each-way wager with the excellent Dominic Elsworth in the saddle.
