The Monday after the Arc always has an "after the Lord Mayors show" feel to it but the winner of a competitive handicap is no easier to find than yesterdays surprise 20-1 German victor Danedream.
Pontefract stages the days main race in the David Brotherton Stewarding handicap at 3.10 and, with eight runners going to post, the contest has a decent each-way shape for the astute punter.
Marcus Tregoning's Muntasib is expected to go very close and at around 7-1 this morning is worth an investment each-way. The 3-y-o won twice as a juvenile but has yet to add to that tally this season, however his fourth at Newbury last time was a huge hint that he is returning to top form. The first-time cheekpieces he sports today can put the edge on him under the promising Tadgh 0'Shea.
3-1f Cruiser heads the market and comes from a stable suddenly in decent form after a long time in the wilderness. He was touched off in a fair Newmarket handicap last time and must run well if repeating that. 0n a negative note he not won for over a year and the blinkers he wears suggest his attitude is not all that it might be.
Progressive Diverting has rattled up a rapid hat-trick this Summer and was impressive at Sandown last time, however the handicapper has had his say and a 6lb higher mark will certainly make life tougher upped in grade.
Tullius may prove best of the rest, with his Thirsk flop best ignored because of the soft ground. He has winning form over course and distance earlier in the season and will appreciate this much faster surface today as the heatwave continues.
In summary Muntasib appears primed for a bold run and can be produced late in a race sure to be run at a suitably decent pace. The stiff uphill finish can bring his proven stamina into play and he is a solid win and place proposition at 7-1.
