racing preview

Lawney Hill has done wonders with her new recruit Double Handful, and the 6-y-o can land the Delta Company 40 Commando Royal Marines Handicap Hurdle at Taunton this afternoon.

The freegoing type has won both starts for these connections, landing some hefty bets first time up at this course and is clearly thriving for a change of scenery. He defied a penalty in the expected style at Plumpton a fortnight ago, briefly short of room approaching the straight but quickening on the bridle once switched out approaching two out, less-than-fluent leaps at that flight and at the last (went right) not halting him. The handicapper has had his say, but he's bound to be very hard to beat the way he's rapidly progressing and a three timer is there for the taking.

The £10,000 prize money has attracted a fiercely competitive field, with perhaps the champion trainer's Ted Spread the most dangerous rival. He seems well treated on handicap debut after a decent second in novice company last time, and it is surely a huge clue that Ruby Walsh travels over from Ireland on a Tuesday.

Monetary Fund has been off the course for 283 days, but has joined the red-hot Venetia Williams yard and any move in the betting for him later on would be a huge clue he is fit and readied for this. He had placed form at a higher level in the past and is well capable of featuring under the improving Aidan Coleman.

Topweight Grey Gold impressed with the way he travelled when winning at Bangor 66 days ago, but seems to have been very harshly handicapped after that and will surely struggle to give weight away to some unexposed rivals.

Pantxoa hails from a yard that enjoyed a fantastic treble on Saturday and he is entitled to respect after failing to stay 2m5f last time out. This test of speed will suit and rider Wayne Hutchinson has been the most improved rider of the season so far.

In summary a very warm standard for a midweek handicap, but Double Handful has really impressed in winning lesser races on the bridle, and can continue on an upward curve. At around 4-1 this morning he represents a decent win investment to sweep through at the last.
