Al Freej to defy topweight at Wolverhampton

racing preview

Roger Varian enjoyed a fantastic season on the turf last year and his Al Freej can boost his all weather win rate in the Follow US On Twitter @bluesq Handicap.

The 3-y-o didn't need to match his previous runner-up efforts on this surface to readily land the odds in a modest maiden over course and distance eleven days ago, but travelled in the manner of a smart prospect before easing clear on the bridle. His opening handicap mark looks very fair with the prospect of more improvement to come, and he is confidently expected to land this under the promising 3lb claimer Dominic Fox.

Main danger for the £3500 prize money comes from the unexposed twice-raced Cats Eyes. This half-sister to several winners built on the promise of her debut when readily fending off a subsequent winner at Kempton (5f)three weeks ago. If handling this different all-weather surface she is entitled to go very close from a potentially lenient rating.

Gin Twist has hit form since connections reached for the headgear, and his win last time deserved extra credit as he failed to settle off a dawdling early pace yet still managed to prevail close home in a bunched finish. A truer gallop will suit, but the handicapper has put him up in the weights and a wide draw in eight will be hard to overcome.

Lady Caprice has been a different proposition for this stable, winning a brace of 5f AW handicaps in impressive fashion. However, she had no real excuse behind Gin Twist in her hat-trick bid last time out (very uneasy in the betting) and is drawn widest of all now.

Perhaps Majestic Rose might reward support at bigger prices. He was a wholesale gamble on seasonal debut but could never challenge after fluffing the start and being settled in rear off a crawl. The cash suggested he had been in decent form at home and it will be interesting if more positive tactics are employed by a new rider today.

In summary, a competitive race for the grade, but Al Freej represents a top stable who have a superb win rate and he is expected to give the weight away. At around 5-2 this morning he is worth a decent win investment to outclass his rivals.
