racing preview

Moon Dice, unbeaten in both starts so far this season, can step up in class at Cheltenham this afternoon by landing the valuable graded Greatwood Hurdle at 2.20

The progressive 6-y-o has really taken off since being switched to handicaps, readily winning the ultra-competitive Galway Hurdle in July. He has been deliberately laid off since to be fresh for this, and it is very hard to knock his claims given a profile of steady improvement.

Irish trainer Paul Flynn has thrived since starting his trainer career a few years ago and does well with his raiders to England. With Tom Doyle in the saddle, he is must go close with the easing of the ground further enhancing cast iron claims.

Morning favourite Patesse won by a wide margin at Sandown and has escaped a raised rating because of the early closing nature of this £100,000 prize. However he may be flattered by that win, where it was a big advantage to be prominent after a very ragged start, and previous efforts had sugested he was in the handicappers grip.

A bigger danger may come from 20-1 chance Third Intention. His yard has returned to form after a quiet start, and he shaped well when a smooth travelling sixth on seasonal debut behind Brampour at Ascot. A Media Luz was third that day and will be popular, however he has always been a "speed" type who races freely, and may not get up the Cheltenham hill on the eased ground.

In summary, a below par renewal of this graded hurdle, with several improving handicappers poised to step up in class. At around 7-1 this morning Moon Dice is worth a decent each-way investment to transfer his useful Irish form across the water.
