Tonic set for successful chasing debut

Paul Nicholls unleashes yet another promising French import this afternoon in Tonic Mellysse, and the 4-y-o is confidently expected to win on chasing debut.

0nly three rivals have been declared for the £10000 prize, but all are useful performers and a fascinating clash is on the cards.

0ur selection made a hugely encouraging debut on these shores when winning a fair Ayr juvenile in April and improved further when chasing home Kalann in a Cheltenham minor event on his seasonal debut last month. A physically imposing type, he is reported to have schooled well over the larger obstacles at home, and can outclass two rivals this afternoon under Daryl Jacob.

Tatispout is a headstrong sort who ran far too freely when turned over at long odds-on last time out. He is sure to blaze the trail and try to test the jumping of his two rivals, but may well be vulnerable stamina-wise as they turn for home, even at this sharp course and distance.

Perhaps fellow french native Tornade D'Estruval will pose the biggest threat. He has a big reputation in his top stable, but failed to live up to market expectations when only fourth in a warm Ascot novice on his debut. He was pulled up in a chase in France, but is probably best not judged on that given the very testing ground, and a bold show would be no suprise on this faster terrain.

In summary, the sponsors will be disappointed that only three runners have turned up for this vauable prize, but quality is not thin on the ground and Tonic Mellysse is worth a win investment at around 6-4 this morning. He will need to jump well at the first attempt given the fast pace Tatispout will set, but can outstay that rival in the straight when the chips are down.
