Richard Rowe's 10-y-o Pocket Aces is selected to land the competitive Hortons Steam Fair handicap chase at Fontwell this afternoon.
The formerly useful handicapper has slipped a deal in the weights after a miserable season in 2010/11, but showed a great deal of promise when fourth on his debut at Plumpton this term. He travelled well under a patient ride that day until a bad blunder two out ended any chance of reaching the places. An early error saw his rider unseated last time, but he has an ideal fast run race in prospect this afternoon, and is strongly fancied to assert in the straight under Leighton Aspell.
This £4700 contest is sure to be run at a fast pace with confirmed trailblazers Marodima and Morestead lining up in opposition. The latter was granted a very soft lead when winning at Lingfield seven days ago and will surely struggle to dominate here from a raised rating, while Marodima returns after 218 days off and may flag when push comes to shove in the soft ground.
Green to Gold is respected on just his third start since joining the shrewd Don Cantillon yard, but punters have to forgive a very poor effort at Taunton in December where he was struggling from an early stage before being pulled up in the straight.
Veteran Massini Sunset has an excellent record at this unique figure of eight venue and will be plugging on when others cry enough, but he is hardly improving at the age of twelve and it would be disappointing if our choice couldn't beat him from a slipping rating.
In summary, a tight handicap but an ideal chance for Pocket Aces to snap a losing run stretching back to December 2009. A rapid pace seems set to collapse in front of him and at around 4-1 this morning he is well worth a substancial win investment.
