Stratford stages a competitive card this afternoon and the lightly raced 8-y-o Power Pack Jack is selected to land the featured JH Rowe Memorial handicap chase.
The Nigel Twiston-Davies trained gelding returned on seasonal debut to land a warm Perth handicap last time, staying on strongly up the straight and shaping as though this marathon 3m4f trip will be right up his street. He has been raised a whopping 12lb for that win but is the one proven stayer in a race that is sure to be very strongly run.
Several of these are at their best when blazing the trail. Inishrush and Runshan are both in superb form but both need to dominate to be seen at best, and may cancel each other out over a trip that neither are sure of staying.
Topweight Lost Glory has won three of his last five starts and is clearly in decent heart. However, he has never been the most fluent jumpers and struggled to win a poor contest over hurdles on his latest start and it is possible the handicapper has finally got him in his grip.
Perhaps a bigger danger may be in the form of Tony Martin's Irish raider Corrick Bridge. This stable has a fearsome reputation when the cash is down and the 9-y-o comes here after three respectable runs since winning at Bellewstown in July. He shapes as though the extra 4f will suit and could be well treated in his first foray over to England.
Dusty Dane seems best of the bigger priced runners and can reverse latest Plumpton form with Runshan, who enjoyed a soft lead from the front on that occasion. He is in here off bottomweight and will be plodding on when some of the pacepushers have cried enough.
In summary, a host of in-form contenders for the £8000 prize, but Power Pack Jack is unexposed in these long distance handicaps and hails from a stable in blistering form. A patient ride is required from Sam Twiston-Davies, with an early tussle for the lead sure to bring his stamina into play on the final lap. At around 4-1 this morning he is worthy of an each-way investment.
