Bollin Fiona will relish Carlisle slog in the mud

racing preview

The reliable Bollin Fiona is selected to land Carlisle's featured handicap hurdle this afternoon, with stamina at a premium in the forecast heavy ground.

Donald Whilians 7-y-o gained her sole success in a course and distance handicap in March 2010, and has not been discredited on either start so far this season. This severe test of stamina at 2m4f suits well and she now features on a very winnable mark at present.

The £4400 prize money has attracted some in-form rivals with perhaps topweight Gulf Punch the main danger. He wasted no time getting back on the upgrade for his new yard, winning twice in recent months at up to 3m, showing a good attitude to score at Musselburgh last month. However the handicapper has raised him 9lb's and carrying 11-12 will not be easy in these conditions.

Ebony River is an ex-Donald McCain gelding who made a good start for this new yard at Hexham in November, and would have been much closer but for late mistakes at Uttoxeter last time. He will be thereabouts if his errant jumping holds up today.

Long Distance may need the run after 144 days away from the action, while bottomweight Arctic Night is one to watch in the betting having posted a series of eye-catching runs in novice hurdles before finishing second on his handicap bow at Ayr in March.

A tight handicap in summary, but Bollin Fiona is proven at this gruelling coursed when the mud is flying and is worth a win investment at around 4-1 this morning.
