Ascot stages a competitive days racing on Friday with the highight the Keltbray Noel Murless Stakes(Listed) over 1m6f at 4.05.
David Elsworth's Highland Castle appeared a stayer to follow when stepped up in trip at Salisbury last time out, given a very confident ride from rear by Jamie Spencer and winning hard held from some useful rivals. This appears a slight step up in class today but such was the ease of his win he cannot be sensibly opposed. 7-4 is a price worth securing this morning.
Barbican is the main danger and comes here in rude health after landing a competitive handicap over 1m4f here at the start of the month. He has been transformed by a switch in yards to Alan Bailey and has now won four of his last seven starts. The step up to listed class is less of a concern than the extra two furlongs in trip he faces today, with stamina far from assured on run-style or breeding.
Buthelezi will relish this drop in grade having blazed the trail in the Group 1 St Leger last time, and merits respect with the Gosden stable in fine form. However he has been on the go some time now and has never been the easiest ride (wears a hood).
Solar Sky returns after a three month absence and will be fresher than most. His latest form with to Arc bound Masked Marvel reads well now and he has scope to improve given he has only raced four times in his career. Second in the Queen's Vase at the Royal meeting shows this course holds no fears and he can go close.
In summary, Highland Castle went into many notebooks last time and can follow up. Expect him to be dropped out last initially by Spencer, before cutting through the field in the straight on the ideal fast ground forecast this afternoon.
