Champion trainer Paul Nicholls can land Ascot's valuable handicap hurdle this afternoon with his progressive novice Prospect Wells.
The £150,000 prize money has attracted a large field of classy speed test handicappers, but the thrice raced 6-y-o appears very well treated on his debut in this sphere. He made a very encouraging start at Cheltenham when second in a novice hurdle that has proved useful form, before really impressing with his fast hurdling in victory at Newbury on testing ground. This faster terrain will be ideal and his turn of speed that saw him run in group class on the flat can be the telling factor under Ruby Walsh.
The weights are headed by Brampour who has already bagged two wins this season, including a warm handicap over this course and distance. He ran well when third to Grandouet at graded level at Cheltenham last Satruday, but will do very well to lump 11-12 to victory against some unexposed rivals.
Sailors Warn is a very interesting Irish raider, with the champion AP McCoy in the saddle. He was turned over at 1-3f in a Listed event at Naas last time out, but the testing ground may have been a factor and it will be fascinating to watch the betting with regard to his chances.
Desert Cry hails from a yard in great form and he landed a hotly contested handicap first time out this season, defying 11-12 in the process. He is sure to be thereabouts but the handicapper has raised his rating and others may be better treated now.
Via Galileo shaped as though returning to his best when second last time out and is respected, while Marsh Warbler has attracted support in ante-post lists and has each-way claims from a career high mark.
In summary, a fiercely competitive field of seventeen, with at least a dozen of them with realistic claims. Prospect Wells is the one runner who may be underated by the handicapper, and this speed course is sure to suit him. At around 5-1 this morning he is worth a win investment to assert after the last.
