racing preview

David Evans prolific Pale 0rchid can defy topweight and land Lingfield's featured Marriottlingfieldpark.co.uk Handicap at 4.30 this afternoon.

The 3-y-o has been a revelation this winter on the all-weather, winning twice and finishing second four times from just six starts since arriving from Ireland. Last time out she was denied on the nod by John Gosden's unexposed Discoverer, the pair trapping some eight lengths clear of the third from the furlong pole, and this appears a great opportunity to register another win under the useful 3lb claimer Matthew Cosham.

Main danger for the £6500 prize money may come from the thrice raced Abi Scarlet. She sprang a 25-1 surprise on her second start when turning over 2-5f Derivatives (beaten again since at odds-on), and proved that run no fluke when touched off by Gabrials Bounty on her handicap debut 13 days ago. The negative is she is not proven on this faster poytrack surface and has appears something of a galloper rather than a speedster. This sharp 6f may see her outpaced and poorly placed in the early stages and closing from behind is never easy for one so inexperienced.

0ratorian is another progressive performer who has improved with every one of his six career starts. He won a brace of 6f handicaps in January and confirmed himself still on the upgrade when a clear runner-up at Wolverhampton 33 days ago. However, the handicapper has raised him in the weights and a wide draw at a course he has yet to run at may prove too much of a test.

Sweet 0vation swept through fast and late over course and distance last time out, but may have been flattered as the trailblazers rather cut each others throats and set things up for her that day. A higher rating demands more in this warmer contest.

Waseem Faris is 13lb better off with our selection for a four length beating when the pair last met in January and will attract support from the number crunchers. However, he has only beaten one horse home in two previous runs at this course and doesn't have the upwardly mobile profile of several others.

In summary, a typically competitive sprint handicap where fortune in running is sure to play a huge part. Pale 0rchid is really thriving on her racing at present and is worth a decent win investment at around 5-2 this morning.
