racing preview

Always Right had an excellent first season over fences and is selected to land the ultra competitive Monteith Memorial Champion Chase this afternoon.

John Wade's 9-y-o was highly progressive in handicap chases last season, winning twice and closing the campaign out with an excellent effort in the valuable Scottish National. He has an excellent record at this venue and seem sure to go close for a stable enjoying a flying start to the season.

Dangers are aplenty in a very warm race for the £17000 prize money, with perhaps topweight Sa Suffit the most feared. He is a very fluent jumper who improved over fences through 2009/10 and shaped well at this track on his reappearance, before a creditable run over hurdles at Haydock subsequently. However lumping 11-12 in these testing conditions will not be easy and he may tire on the long run-in.

Paul Nicholls has to be respected when sending raiders this far North of the border, and his reliable stayer Take the Breeze will be all the fitter for a recent pipeopener when sixth over hurdes. He competed in decent handicaps last term and is sure to be thereabouts if finding a rhythm in his sometimes hit and miss jumping.

Veteran Skippers Brig has been lightly raced over the years, but has a good strike rate and showed career best form when beating Ballabriggs over this course and distance last year. He does usually need a run or two to reach optimum fitness levels and his yard is enduring a quiet spell at the moment.

In summary a superb staying chase can go to the improving Always Right. James Reveley gets on very well with our selection and he can pounce in the straight as some more exposed rivals tire. At around 5-1 this morning he is worth a decent win investment.
